Pipo X7 Windows 8.1 with Bing, free?

According to the Minix site that Windows 8.1 with Bing is only free for tablet and not TV boxes? Any confirmation to that statement?

Thanks blinkone, but do you have to buy the OS after that first year? Also could you receive 4k video source with it? Thanks again.

Based on what I am reading from Microsoft itself, this is not a true statement. Win 8.1 with Bing is going on sub $300 laptops from major manufacturers!

        Anyone can Google this fact!

Ken is usually right about this stuff but this time it doesn't appear that way based on the research I did on this very subject.

According to official Windows blog articles, Windows 8.1 with Bing is free (licensing fee waived) for hardware partners making Windows phones and tablets that have screen size smaller than 9".

"To accelerate the creation of great mobile devices running Windows and grow our number of users, we announced today that Windows will be available for 0 dollars to hardware partners for Windows Phones and tablets smaller than 9” in size. This offering also enables hardware partners to provide their customers a one-year subscription to Office 365. These steps will help our partners to deliver the rich experience of Windows plus best-in-class hardware, software and services to consumers at affordable prices."

Windows 8.1 with Bing can also be installed on low-cost laptops (less than $250), but it is not clear whether the manufactures have to pay a licensing fee for that. Based on this, Minix can certainly install it on their Z64 (if they are willing to absorb the license fee, if any). The other question is what Microsoft consider this device as - is it a laptop, tablet or phone? Since the device by itself doesn't have a display, do they consider the size of the TV/monitor that it can be attached to.

Windows 8.1 with Bing can be installed on all form factors. On non-tablets, the limitation is cost of the device. On tablets the limitation between cost and for free is screen size. The code is the same for tablet vs. other device, but the effective cost for the mfg per device may be different. Zotac was one of the first ones licensing its MiniPCs with WwB. From what Paul Thurrott has written and said on the topic, it is rather free (<8" tablet) vs. reduced cost (>10" tablet and PC devices (laptop, desktop, mini PCs) under $250) vs. standard OS license.

So, Pipo is either absorbing the licensing fee or violating Microsoft terms. This also explains why Meegopad is charging $29 extra for Windows with Bing version.

I have windows with bing on my asus vivo40b media center pc. It does not come with free office for the year. The tablet version of windows 8 bing does, but the pc version doesn't. It is likely pipo is using the free tablet version of windows instead of the pc version which has a small cost.

I think we will see what will happen...
Maybe Pipo, because they also focus to intel at there tablets, have an agreement with MS...?
Maybe MS recognized that it isn't a bad idea to also deliver W8.1wB for free at STB's because to attack also this Android-segment/domain...?

I happen to get a generic Windows 8.1 with Bing ISO. Having MSDN account (because I have a team of MSDN developers) was a god send
It also does not require activation like the Pipo ROM.

I have to say I like it better than the Win 8.1 the Pipo comes with for many reasons.
                      1) It's not a China version and a real MS un-modified ISO
                      2) It is clean of Pipo drivers and crap. I ripped the drivers and made my own driver package and on boot install them. Freakin works great!
                      3) It seems faster to me!

Now here is the deal... DO NOT ASK ME FOR THIS ISO!!!! It's not going to happen. And due to MS and licensing I cannot make a ROM for you guys! Sorry.

Only clue I will give is there is a leaked ISO out there... Nuff said.

Would providing the driver package be an issue?

Of cause not, because the key is at a table at the UEFI (called SLIC)...
This BIOS has no keys set for this. The ISO just plain does not need activation! Well at least mine does not.

Again there are no keys set in the BIOS!

Or I am not understanding how all this works?

Thanks for all the great info folks. I knew windows 8.1 + bing was free for the manufacturer, but I wasn't sure if it require a activation or key given all the misinformation around here. I do have one question, does Pipo or whoever also supply the image/iso to reset these devices back to factory default? I haven't thoroughly searched on this topic, but since the subject seem relevant, I thought I posted here.
