    Openelec On the Way?

Some genuinely hopeful news over at the Tronsmart forum. I'm quoting from a post by Ovidiu Ceorchelea in the Linux thread:

"...I had several discussions last week with Ben El Bas Marketing Manager at Allwinner and explained technical wise whats the main issue and what is missing and keep us away using Ubuntu or any Linux Desktop OS with hardware acceleration via vpu / gpu.
He promissed me and to community that they will fix this issue whithin a month ( the discussion was 3 weeks ago)

Me and some skilled friends working on full porting Openelec to A80 hardware (using Optimus boards for dev)
Our work stucked for the moment on lack of hardware acceleration via vpu / gpu but once we have the driver our port should be available whithin 1 or 2 weeks.

I hope this is a good news for all A80 users."

It is indeed the best news I've had since buying this box...

hmmmmmmmm, I only belief the promise from Allwinner if I see the promised vpu / gpu drivers...

No need of money .... Openelec is foss and will keep it that way.
tronsmart got the drivers but we did not get them yet ... hope in 1 or 2 days to receive them and probably in 1 or 2 weeks depending on the time will probably have working flashable image of Openelec for A80.

          Best Regards

Greatly appreciate your commitment to getting Openelec on this box. I hope Allwinner delivers those drivers to you ASAP ! They are responsible for a significant improvement in Tronsmart's latest Lubuntu build - but Openelec will be a crowning achievement.

Why should it end anywhere? This is a big world, and the more choices we have, the better. You can have your Linux, of course (but the latest Lubuntu release still has quite some way to go), and we can have Openelec. It's a large tent..

Besides, given the current state of the Draco and its firmware, a Porsche is a dream: we're driving a DeLorean on two-star gasoline, and it's going to end badly unless we get some real alternatives into the mix...

For our younger readers, the DeLorean was the 80s super-sports car that fell apart a week after you took a mortgage on it, and which no-one today can fix.

That's funny, MAS - and good to see you around . (Do you think the reason they have a lot of parts is because only a few cars were sold..?)

I agree, Openelec - done right - will be a breath of fresh air for our box. I'm also curious to see if frequency switching will work on the Draco and - if it does - whether it smoothens out video playback.

Guys i need few things from you if you can help me out

While you testing Ubuntu with hw acceleration build
Can any of you create an excel spreadsheet that lists out each issue video related, date/firmware version, and the testing conditions for each issue?

I have a clear and open contact with Allwinner R&D Team and they
will do their best to investigate and it will help if you guys can organize these issues into a clear list.

                        Thank you a lot.

I don't think that many test the Ubuntu, but I found out, that high bit rate h.264 doesn't work (HDD at USB2.0)...
                          Have a look at http://www.freaktab.com/showthread.p...l=1#post279857 ...

Also I read about problems with YT http://www.freaktab.com/showthread.p...l=1#post281548 and maybe a way to fix it http://www.freaktab.com/showthread.p...l=1#post281904 ...

These are the only information I got at the moment...
