HI, I'm trying to root an RK3026 based tablet, vroot works ok but fills the tablet with Chinese crap and won't let me install SuperSU instead, surely there has to be a legitimate root method that doesn't load rubbish on the tablet.

Try KingoRoot. Works just fine on RCA tablet with RK3066 SoC.
