    Polaroid 8" Internet Tablet model PTAB8000 won't perform a tablet UPDATE ?

    I recently discovered I have another issue with my PTAB8000.

    Whenever I go into SETTINGS > About tablet > Update and try to run the tablet update process, it always fails.

    It first says:

    "Please press button to check update online".

    So I press the "CHECK UPDATE" button, and it keeps responding with the error message "Check failed! Please check your network!"

    I've tried repeating this process over and over, and get the exact same message. I also tried fully powering the tablet off and on, and still no luck.

    I can connect the internet on my tablet with no problems. I can check email, use the browser, so my internet connection and WiFi connection do not appear to be the issue.

    I also tried going to McDonald's to use their WiFi, and tried doing the tablet update, and the same error message occurred.

    Has anyone else had any luck using the tablet Update feature on their Polaroid PTAB8000?

    I'm assuming the purpose of this feature is to check for changes to either the operating system or the firmware?

    I'm not sure if I was clear about what I was asking?

    First go into SETTINGS.

    Next scroll all the way down on the left side, and at the very bottom is ABOUT TABLET.

    Click on ABOUT TABLET, and you will see UPDATE on the top right.

    Click on UPDATE and you will see a button in the lower right CHECK UPDATE.

    Whenever I press CHECK UPDATE, I keep getting a response which says "Check failed! Please check your network!"

    Has anyone else tried this feature on your PTAB8000, and were you successful in connecting, or did you receive the same message I am receiving above?

    I would assume that this feature is very important to have working properly, in order to receive system updates from Polaroid?

      Not really. Just go to http://southerntelecom.com/polaroidsupport/firmware/ The PTAB8000 is the last one on the list.

        Thanks. I downloaded the firmware update file from the above website. The PDF file instructions which came with this firmware update states the following:

        PLEASE NOTE: This Firmware needs to be performed ONLY if you have locked yourself out of your tablet (forgotten password, etc). Your tablet is pre-installed with OTA Firmware capability (Over The Air). OTA Updating provides an update via our servers that streams the process of updating a Custom ROM. As long as you are connected to a WiFi network and have over 50% battery, you can receive the updates wirelessly. To check if updates are available, on your tablet go to Settings then select About Tablet then select Update (make sure OTA is turned ON), then select Check update in the lower right corner. If there is an update available, the tablet will walk you through the process. If you update your tablet using the process below, you are overwriting the ROM with the same ROM the unit came with. There is no need to do this unless you have locked yourself out of the tablet (forgotten password, etc).
        So this firmware download from Polaroid is only for use if you locked yourself out of the tablet. It contains the exact same ROM that your tablet had installed when you purchased it.

        And this means the original problem I asked about in this thread is still a valid issue.

        And it also means that this CHECK UPDATE button is very important ... so it needs to be working properly.

        Has anyone else attempted to perform an UPDATE by hitting the CHECK UPDATE button, and were you successful, or did you receive the same network error message I stated in my original post?

        If you haven't tried using this CHECK UPDATE, please do so, and report your results in this thread, so I will know if others are experiencing the same problem as me?

        Also ... my About Tablet screen states the following for anyone who is curious of which version of the tablet I have:

        Model numer
        PTAB8000

        Android version
        4.0.3

        Kernel version
        2.6.34

        Build number
        PTAB8000.V00.92.00.20120831 (which likely means it was created 8/31/2012)

          FYI... the firmware on your tablet is newer than the "update" you downloaded. Don't delete it, though - it may get you out of a jam some day.

            Any other PTAB8000 owners out there????

            I still need your help with my original question?

            Does the CHECK UPDATE feature under SETTINGS > ABOUT TABLET > UPDATE work on your tablet?


            I get a network error message on mine.

            All you need to do is go into SETTINGS ... then go into ABOUT TABLET ... then go into UPDATE ... then press CHECK UPDATE.

            Then please tell me whether you received an error message or did it work successfully?

            I've attempted to use this check update feature numerous times, both on my home wifi network and also at a local McDonalds on their Wifi network, and I still get the exact same network error message.

            This CHECK UPDATE appears to be used for downloading firmware updates from Polaroid, so I believe it is important to know that it is working correctly.

              you *do* realize dolorespark is just trying to help...? I would use less caps and bold letters-it might seem a little less like you're demanding help....

                If you honestly believe Southern Telecom will be making updates on any kind of regular basis I've got a couple bridges to sell you real cheap.

                  I understand what dolorespark is saying and I appreciate her help. However her response does not solve my problem.

                  I only capitalized the names of the tablet menu items to be pressed, to make my sentences more readable, since I am trying to present a set of instructions to the readers.

                  And I used bold on sentences that I wanted to draw people's attention to.

                  Now back to my original question ... could others who own a PTAB8000 please perform a CHECK UPDATE and please let me know you receive a network error message?

                    Actually ... yes, I appreciate your response. It lets me know that my tablet is not the only one with this problem.

                    I was trying to determine if I needed to return my recently purchased tablet due to this issue ?

                    If everyone else with a PTAB8000 could also perform this CHECK UPDATE test and report your results here, we will all know whether this is a non-working feature for everyone, or whether it works on some tablets, but not on others ?

                      I spoke with customer support, and they told me that the below file is the latest version for the PTAB8000, and they told me it matches the build I have now, so I don't need to apply it:

                      They also told me that the error message I am receiving when I hit CHECK UPDATE:

                      "Check failed! Please check your network!"
                      is what Polaroid uses when they have no new update available.

                      Support said that whenever a new update is available, a message will be displayed automatically in the lower right corner of the screen.

                      In my opinion, the error message should say something like "No new updates available" instead of "Check failed!"

                          Where did you get that file?

                          The one on the ST website is still V00.90.00 (8/13/2012), I just downloaded it to be certain.

                            As I stated, I spoke with ST Customer Service, and they told me about this dropbox file.

                            The internal zip file contained within the above dropbox zip file has a size of 137,637KB and was created on 8/31/2012

                            The internal zip file contained within the zip file on ST's website has a size of 137,633KB and was created on 8/13/2012.

                            So the above dropbox file matches my build date of 8/31, and the one on ST's website is a few weeks older, and has a size difference of 4KB.

                            The majority of files contained in both of these zips have date/time stamps of 8/10/2012 - 4:19, so there probably aren't any significant differences between the two files.

                            Apparently ST needs to move the above newer dropbox file to their download site.

                            Also mbellot, when you replied "no" to my previous question about the CHECK UPDATE feature ... did you mean "no" you do not get a network error message, or "no" this process does not work for you either?

                            I guess I really didn't understand your response when you replied "No"?

                            Honestly, I'm still not certain if others are getting the same network error message as me?

                            So truthfully, I don't know if my tablet has a bug with this update process or not? The customer service person I spoke to may have been wrong about what she told me concerning this network error message, so I would prefer to hear from actual PTAB8000 owners about whether they also receive this message or not.

                            If a few more owners of PTAB8000 could perform this CHECK UPDATE test as described in post #1 above, and then reply whether you received a network error message, I would greatly appreciate it.

                            It's extremely easy to perform this test.

                              No, check update does not work. I get the same "network error" message you are seeing.
