    Finless 1.7 ROM + KIZS kernel + MK808 Thanks & Thoughts

Forgive my ignorance ... I'm very new to this ... I just wanted say "Thank You" to the gentlemen who developed the ROM and the kernel, to make my MK808 so much nicer, than when I first got it!

    UG802 1.7 ... http://www.freaktab.com/showthread.p...rformance-ever!

    KIZS MK808 kernel... http://www.armtvtech.com/armtvtechfo...start=70#p4639

I've been looking over the forums trying to figure out how I can eek out a bit better performance. I've read about the 5v/2a charger (which came with my MK808), the wi-fi debacle, and few other various anomalies.

Bottom line, there's simply too much for me to sort through! ... particularly as I don't often play with the thing ... and when I do, it ain't for very long!

Netflix appears to be working ok ... very blotchy the first couple minutes ... then about as good as I get off my Roku. I just finally got Amazon video working through FireFox last nite ... that had some issues getting going ... but all in all, I can't complain! Being able to hide the "bar" sure is slick! I was afraid to, at first ... 'cause I wasn't sure how to get it back ... but, when I was done watching video, there it was!

I've tried the stock ROM, another ROM (geekbuying?), and this combination ... with various uPnP/DLNA/player combinations, to stream recorded 1080p TV from WMC ... at best, I get about 2 seconds ... then 5 minutes of "loading ..." ... then another 2 seconds ... and so on.

As of yet, I'm of the opinion most of my problems are caused by poor wi-fi. I found the other wi-fi thread, and if I get what I need, I'm hoping I can fix the issue, and that I'll then have little to no issues with Netflix, Amazon, or WMC!

I've looked at the CPU speed stuff ... I installed some sorta "monitor" ... I'm purdy afraid of it ... don't wanna do the wrong thing, and burn out my stick! Best guess is, it's set to automatically increase speed, as needed?!

    I don't even remember which ROM/kernel I did ... I mean, I know it was 1080p ... but I don't remember if I did 1gb or 2gb ... I think there was like a 14xxMhz deallie ... I think I did that one! Anyhow, for a couple movies I've watched, despite definitely not being 1080p, it's purdy good!

I see there's a new bluetooth model out. Unless it'd work as well with my Logitech K400, as the USB does, I guess I don't really need it?! It'd be nice to transfer small pictures or songs ... but I've also got a tablet, so I really don't need anything like that. However, if wi-fi is ultimately the issue, it'd be nice if I could simply plug in a new USB wi-fi adapter, and be done with it! ... at that, a 5ghz adapter! I have a wi-fi adapter ... I simply plugged it in ... the lights didn't come on ... nothing else happened ... EXCEPT, while it was plugged in, my wi-fi (just the little icon on the "bar") showed 3 bars ... and when I unplugged it, it only showed 2 bars?! ... how 'bout that?! If I didn't need the K400, I'd leave it plugged in! Anyhow, if there's ever a new ROM/Kernel for the MK808 that allows me to use a USB wi-fi adapter, I'd be very interested in trying that!

IIRC, there was a deal to set font size ... it's somewhat difficult for me to read some of the text on stuff ... I tried a couple settings ... but nothing seemed to take?! ... and I'm not talking about the main screens/apps ... those are ok! ... mostly, within apps!

I'd also be interested in any pictures or whatever I can display, to show the difference between 1080p and 720p, or whatever?! My app icons are very crisp ... but my wallpaper looks like ****! ... not sure if that's just 'cause my TV is 37in?! ... or if I'm doing something else wrong?! I'm purdy sure everything's good to go for 1080p ... just not sure what's actually displaying 1080p, or not?!

streaming from WMC mostly working now

... thought I'd update this with a bit of success...

My Wi-Fi issues were apparently two fold... I discovered several weeks ago, using my tablet, that for my HDHR3 to work well, it had to be on a separate LAN from my normal internet Wi-Fi... due mostly to conflicts with recording HD TV OTA while also streaming Netflix or such. However, in prior attempts to stream .wtv to my MK808, I tried going over my normal Wi-Fi... which the widget shows as mostly 11mbps... often, less.

In getting my HDHR3 to work better, I plugged it directly into my 2nd router... as well as my WMC laptop. I then tried using Skifta + MXPlayer on my tablet... it's still nor perfect, but it's very, very close!

Fully expecting all of 11mbps from my 2nd router, I half heatedly switched my MK808 to it, installed the same apps, and gave it a try. To my amazement, performance was basically the same as my tablet! Double checking my widget, it read 56mbps! I then watched the rest of the game from last week on it.

But, at one point, it came grinding to a halt... checking the widget again, it was now reading 5mbps! Here I thought I wouldn't need to make use of the new soldering iron I bought yesterday, after all... but, after so much success, to see it all go down the toilet, I let my frustration get the better of me, and finally popped the darn thing open! Sure enough, on the one side, the antenna wire was soldered directly across both ANT and GND. On the other side, the contacts are simply long enough to contact the thingy stuck inside the case. So I heated up the iron, and freed the GND. Then, I proceeded to attempt to cover the exposed wire, so it wouldn't make contact with the GND, again. In attempting that, the ANT broke off! I was almost ready to try soldering it back on, then figured, why not give it a try with only the one antenna? ...bingo 58mbps!... steady!

I finished the rest of the game... no more issues... other than, it's not quite perfect... but, very, very close!

I was gonna request the ability to use a USB Wi-Fi to override the built in, but I seem to recall something about USB limiting to like 48mbps or something?

Anyhow, my 2nd router is old. I've been planning to buy a new dual band to see if I could get away from having my HDHR3 and/or my WMC laptop plugged directly in. So, I think I'll wait to see what new issues that introduces, or solves.

But, ideally, I'll run all my WMC stuff on 5ghz, and all the rest on 2.4ghz. At which, I'm guessing the built in MK808 Wi-Fi is 2.4ghz only? So, it still might be nice to have the ability to plug in USB Wi-Fi in the MK808, at least to give it a 5ghz connection?

I also saw the thing about droid mote, and put that on my tablet and phone. Kinda nice, the "server" piece requires root... which my MK808 is! ...didn't test the auto start on boot yet... but if that works, that frees up the USB from the K400 keyboard. But if not, I'd be curious to know if ya could otherwise use a hub?

The Bluetooth model might otherwise help, as well.

I haven't received any answers to questions I've raised here... likely cause to most folks, they're simply not worth answering. I've done a lot of googling to figure out what I think I know, so far. Mostly little offhand bits, here and there. Still, I do appreciate that some folks post such bits, now n then.

Not the least of which, Mr. Finless' efforts! ... at which, I've made use of his "donate" button!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

      spoke too soon

      ...spoke too soon!

Streaming started getting real bad again... figured maybe I should re-solder the antenna back on... maybe that was a good idea... maybe not... but at the same time, I thought maybe the other side, with the two contacts that simply touch the thingy on the inside of the case... so I got the bright idea to drop some solder on the thingy, to shorten the distance. It more er less seemed to work.. in fact, for a while, I was pullin 65mbps, steady!... and even the streaming was nice... almost like it was live! Then, bout 20min later, not only wouldn't it stream ok... I'd pick the video, and it'd basically lock up... and drop Wi-Fi, altogether (never seen that before).

I've since opened it back up, and one of the pieces of solder simply fell out... and where it was was crusty and black... I think I might've melted the contact! I still show 65mbps... and it seems like every time I open it up, and try again, it's fine... for about 20min!

I may be no expert, but I'm utterly convinced now... the built in Wi-Fi on these things is the #1 problem! Perhaps if I knew how to properly solder electronics, it'd be no big deal... but, clearly, I don't!

The thing's got a USB port... I've got a USB Wi-Fi adapter... I don't know what it'd take, to make the MK808 use that, over the built in?... but it sure would solve a lotta problems for a lotta people!... time to hit the wish list!

...one more thing ...it sure would be nice if WMC let ya set an option to stream 720p!... the picture on 1080 is very, very nice!... but, at this point, I'd gladly take 720, if that makes it smooth, and keeps the audio in sync. As of yet, recording OTA TV with the HDHR3 seems to be a 1080 or bust, proposition.
