    Arnova 10b rooting thread

OK I have looked at this 10b ROM and I think it can be done. However it is a little different than RK29 so I will want to take baby steps and do things one at a time so if you brick I know what step caused it.

masheka, I think your the only one here that is interested. Are you willing to test? Understand I have no way to test and thus changes I make could brick your tablet. However you can always flash back using RKBatch tool. Do you know how to do that?

You will need to have the RK28 flash drivers installed. This wont be a simple copy update.img to the SDCard. The changes require use of a flash tool and that flash tool needs drivers installed.
Might you have the drivers installed already from possible previous flashes qwith the 10B?

If not I can make a kit with them to start with.

OK good... You will be using a new tool with my ROM called RK Android 1.23. This allows you to flash only parts of the ROM like boot.img or say just system.img.

As my first test I want to take apart the official ROM from Arnova and make sure I can put it back together again. There will be no mods just stock but I want to make sure I get the tools setup right.

Stay tuned for a test kit. The kit will have the RK28 drivers in it but you wont need those.

OK first test. system.img in the stock update.img is encrypted. I have decrypted it but left it alone as a cramfs. I need to see if this RKAndroid tool 1.23 will flash it without it trying to decrypt. This will be key to our success on getting a rw ext3 /system

        Download this kit.

Unzip it to somewhere. I have set it up to select the imgs by default. However this time I want you to unclick everything except system.img. You will be flashing only system.img to the tablet. We will be using this kit for further tests so leave it unzipped and handy. I will be sending you separate boot.img, system.img, parameter, and setting.ini and will be asking you on those tests to replace the files in this kit with new ones I will be posting here. I will provide more detailed instructions if you need them.

        So for this test
        1) Put your tablet into recovery mode like you would for the RK Batch tool.
        2) Run the RK Android tool.
        3) If your tablet is in recovery mode, at the bottom of this tool it should say "Found RKAndroid Rock USB".
        4) Next to each IMG line uncheck everything except system.img
        5) press the run button and it should start to flash system.img
        6) Look on the panel on the right. Make sure there are no errors.
        7) The tablet should reboot after this is done. If it does not, reset it with the pin hole. Let me know if it boots or brings up the recovery screen.

Let me know how this test goes!

I guess my tester went to bed for the night. It must be pretty late in Belarus.

If anyone else is out there with the Tablet feel try to test also.

Oh no, I took a shower, excuse me. You are online all time, from morning till night (in Belarus), but you are in California. You don't sleep at all??
Test completed - Console said - all OK
And Tablet rebooted. For the first boot there were some bugs - sensor reacted only on key "return" but did nothing (maybe I accidentally touched the screen in calibration), hardware keys worked. After reboot all works fine.

            OS - Win 7 x64
USB Cable forgot to disconnect before first boot.

OK good... we are on our way!

I did not need to add rkcrc to system.img as some said. I figured that was the case.
Yes sometimes after flashing only one .img the screen calibration may for close. Don't worry about that for testing.

OK you going to but up a little longer? I can have the next step in about an hour.

I guess faster than than an hour

Next test. I created a NEW system.img and injected SU and Superuser.apk for the RK28 and set permissions for system to root and 777. It will still only be RO for /system as it is still cramfs but I need to test I can make this.

Please download this file. Unzip it. It is ONLY the system.img. Please copy it to the image folder of the ROM kit you first downloaded replacing the other system.img that in the image folder. You can rename the other system.img if you like e.g. system1.img.

Once again you only need to flash the system.img with the tool.

Let me know how this goes, if it boots, and if you know how to use SU try it. If not no worries.

Next I will modify boot.img and give permissions there. I am thinking boot.img being a pure cramfs file system unlike the RK29, it may also not need rkcrc. I think rkcrc is only needed when making an update.img I bet! Using RKAndroid tool may not need that.
I should have that up soon as well if you can stay up a little longer. Otherwise we can go at it again tomorrow.

                    New BOOT img

OK same thing as the last system.img.

Here is a new boot.img with permissions set. You should only have to flash the boot.img if you have flashed my latest system.img.

So if my last system.img worked now unzip this and copy it into the image folder of the tool replacing the existing boot.img (or rename the existing boot.img)

Using the tool uncheck everything except boot.img and flash this boot.img only
Hopefully if all goes well you should have the same ROOT access as the Kasty ROM did.

Let me know how all this goes as next step is the big one. Convert system into ext3 and get full root access.
Then I will edit the parameter and give you more app space etc.

Was this the system.img or also with the new boot.img?
If only system.img I can understand what you got.
