    Power through HDMI?

    I just picked up one of these to connect my 802-III to my monitor. I had tried several HDMI to DVI adapters, and none worked - either at all or the video was garbled and constantly cutting out. This seems to work perfectly, and while it's VGA, it's still plenty clear and leaves my DVI port for my computer.

    It claims to have some sort of active circuitry to do the conversion, and I assumed this was powered by the micro-USB port on the side. However, in playing with it, I discovered two interesting things:

    1- It works just fine unpowered. I assume this means it's drawing it's power from the HDMI of the 802.

    2- When I do plug in a micro-USB cable from a power source, it actually powers the 802 through the HDMI port. I can literally leave the typical power port on the 802 disconnected, and it powers up and runs fine with the only connection being the HDMI to this converter.

    I'm just wondering if this is OK long-term. I've just never heard of these being powered through the HDMI port, and I wouldn't want to damage it if it wasn't supposed to be. On the other hand, if it doesn't cause probems, it would actually be a nice way to power it, since the ports on these Android sticks tend to be pretty fragile.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    HDMI does not power a device, although a new standard MHL does.

    Perhaps you have a powered USB hub?

      No powered hub, it powers on and starts with nothing connected beside the HDMI to the adapter. I've since noticed that it'll reset when you try to do too much with it, so it looks like while it is getting some power through the HDMI port, it's not getting enough.

      I just thought it was interesting that it gets any power through it.

        Take a look here --> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI
        You can get 5V on PIN 17 to 18 but only with 50mA.
        This is not much Power for a Device tho you need a Power Adapter.
