Neo X5 / Latest Finless 1080P ROM - Blurry text for icons, emails, web browers etc.

    Hi,

I've just got my hands on one of these and everything is working excellent except for text. It's like a computer display over composite, or VGA at best, NOT HDMI and reminds me of a windows install that does not have Truetype installed and setup.

Anyone else have this issue? I flashed the 1080P version of the ROM and it's being output via HDMI (via the cable that shipped with the x5) to my home theatre amp and then output to my 1080i LCD TV. I have a Playstation 3 that is routed in exactly the same way but all text is displayed clear as a bell.

I have yet to swap out the HDMI cable or swap the input channel on the amp but just wanted to check if it's normal for it to look like this.

    Thanks in advance!

Display is washed out, too bright

I've heard this before about this current generation of Android boxes. So it isn't just our Minix boxes that do this.

I really notice it in Chrome where you have black text on pure white background. It looks like a Commodore 64 display. Maybe not even that good. The text looks its absolute worst on a white background. Screen widgets, like the borders of a textbox, are very crude looking. If they choose something like a yellow border for a section or input box, you virtually cannot see it.

I'm using my X5 via HDMI to an ordinary Dell 24" monitor that is nothing special but the same monitor produces very decent display for Windows or OSX.

Yet these same chips in a tablet or cellphone offer a rich saturated display.

I think the default for these boxes is to set the brightness very high for some reason. Maybe they work better that way with the default settings for Chinese TVs or something.

It is annoying that Google is so unfriendly to Android TV boxes that they don't even have an optional preference module to adjust picture quality for Android devices that don't have their own display the way that cellphones and tablets do.

some similar reports on the Minix forum

They suggest using the "movie" setting to darken the display a bit. And some guy is working on a free app to control the white-out conditions on Android TV boxes.

It is a little bizarre that Google hasn't bothered to provide such an elementary control in their prefs. One or two sliders is all it would take. And make it an optional preference option just for the TV box people, something the Android box makers could just enable.

Thanks for the tips and explanation of what's going on - I'm glad it's not just me although I agree why Google hasn't bothered to address this issue stinks.

re:Brightness - yes I installed that app. and it makes things a whole lot better to look at but doesn't address the font issue. I then found this app. and installed it - big mistake. DO NOT INSTALL THIS APP! basically I'm in a boot loop now, stuck at the boot graphic screen, cannot get past it no matter what I do...so I will need to reinstall the firmware and all my apps etc.

Hopefully future ROM releases will address these issues.

not to add insult to the issue,
but the feedback clearly states that users have issues,
always read the comments before installing,
some bad feedback is from not being compatable with the unit itself,
which is unfair, but too many with issues should be a flag to stay away,
hope that helps for next time,
and always read more than the 1st 3 comments shown,
they could always get the most recent 3 to say ok things

              ** Update

I installed the 720p version of the ROM and there's an improvement in the how text and icons are displayed now. Also due to the resolution I can read emails and forum posts a lot easier too.

Thanks all for you comments and suggestions.

If you want to use the 1080 kernel and get larger clear icons etc like 720 kernel then go into build.prop and edit lcd density! I did explain this in my readme for the ROM.

                TIP FOR 1080 kernel USERS:
If you do not like the small icons on the desktop and small mouse pointer.
Use ES file explorer or another root file explorer and open build.prop
                Find the line that says:
                ro.sf.lcd_density=160
                Edit this 160 to 240
Save and reboot. You icons should be larger like 720 now. BUt be aware, some apps do not like 240 setting!

"Perdónalos porque no saben que lo que hacen"
"Oprosti im, jer ne znaju što čine"

Thanks Bob, I had to reinstall the ROM from scratch due to the software issue above so thought I'd give 720p a go - and glad I did too.
