        camera app

The only app that I've used is the stock camera app. If that app isn't there go to the app store and type camera. You'll see an app called camera for Nexus 7, that's a short cut to the camera software even if its not there. Give it a try.

I am using a cheap ($4) Camera which works fine with the camera app, however it wont record any videos (It'll only shoot photos and allow me to switch to camera mode, but pressing record nothing happens.

          Anything I need to do?

Microsfot Lifecam hd3000 on Skype Videocall in true HD? or limited resolution driver UVC set up 640x480? With Android system Info (or Antutu info) you can see Video resolution.

I haven't tried this on MK808 yet, but I have used IP Webcam by Pavel Khlebvich on a couple of little handset and one tablet. It works quite well and is free (surprising given the quality). I use IP CAM Viewer which supports IP Webcam (use Android camera to support IP Webcam). If you have lots of cameras or want to record (JPG only and NO motion detection) then you need the pro version of this. iSpy for Windows (open source) supports video recording of IP Webcam, with motion detection and records video.

To be honest using the MK808 as anything other than a short term solution as a security camera is an expensive solution and probably not a very good one as it doesn't provide an IR night light (unless you happen to have a web cam with it). You best option is to get a dedicated security camera which for indoors you can get a pan and tilt VGA model for around $60 or Foscam VGA without IR cut out for around $80.
