MK809II reboot recovery fail - android with red exclamation

Hi,
I am trying to reboot my mk809ii into recovery but it reboots to an android on its back with an red exclamation mark.
I put the UG802 1.7 ROM on my mk809ii but I want to try the imoto mx1 ROM instead. I can't even get my PC to see it as anything other than 'rockchip _usb' disk drive.
Anyone got any ideas?
Can I put some magic img file on a SD card to recover it?

If your using the stock recovery this is what you get! It is not the same recovery you might be use to! Unless there is a zip file on sdcard you get the dead android man.

What you want is reboot to boor loader. This will put you in flash mode so your PC cn flash a new ROM.
