Is the mx2 only 1.2 ghz the same as the mk808 etc.

I have both an mk808 and mx2 and notice the mk808 is significantly quicker with kizs custom kernel. The mx2 appears to be limited to 1.2 ghz but geekbuying offer says its 1.6 ghz.

Is there a custom kernel to increase the speed that works on this device?

No, there's no specific custom kernel for this one, and it's because the lack of driver sources for wifi & bt. You can try 2dark4you's kernels (you can find it in finless 1.7 rom for mk802iii) , that kernels are going up to 1608mhz and the device works really fast, but remember to place a heatsink before flashing or you will fry it.
