The RIM upgrade using CWM went fine and it rebooted OK.
Then I went back to CWM and used advanced restore to reinstate data.img
now reboot gives lock icon; launcher not accessible.
Workround is to use the menu at the bottom right of the screen from which I can launch a notified app,
ie accuweather in my case. when it exits, the home key is available and works. Then I invoked the
new display setting for menu at bottom and used that after reboot.

The lock screen is deliberate, see Bobs lists of changes for 1.7
By default it is set so you are supposed to hold left mouse button whilst swiping left
to right accross the lock icon.
Having gonee into settingss, disable lock feature by choosing security>None.
[The fact I got in by a backdoor probably *is* a bug]
