If you mean in Explorer you can find it in "USB" any if you're looking inside root directory it's also in "/mnt/usb_storage/usb_disk0/udisk0/"

Know if there's a way to move apps here, or for android to treat it like an external SD?
Also, if that's possible, is using an external HDD any slower than using flash based memory?

I am actually not an expert anyway I think you can move your app into external HDD in form of APK files but impossible to make it run like normal app.
For external HDD speed physically run slower than flash memory but it's unnoticeable when you streaming videos or songs from external HDD. I connect my external HDD 3TB with my MK808B to play 5GB movies file without problem. It is the same as using HDD with PC.

Be warned, you can screw up things badly if done incorrectly.
It will be slower then flash, noticeably? probably not unless you are writing large files.
Can I ask why you plan to use an HDD for apps? considering most apps are around 10megs, and anything game wise, or needing additional storage will most of the time goto the android/data folder?
A cheap class 4 microsd 32gb card would be a much better option.Currently Using:
2 x Nvidia Shield TV | MiniMX III
Retired Devices:
MiniMX III-II | Mk808b Pro | Mk808b Plus | Raspberry Pi 1 + 2 | UBOX R89 | MK808 | MK808b | CS008 | X1 4K (rk3288_809) | CYX_809III | Ouya | CX-919 | S82 Plus | Tronstmart R68
