How can I restore my Kodi backup automatically in a new ROM?

So you have it in one file now what is the point to complicate things. Gzip looks to be built into busybox.

Do I need to tar first and then gzip or is there one command for it? Thanks for all of your help prahjister. I'll donate if I can square this away...

When Iuse the -zcvf command it says "tar: removing leading '/' from member names" line below says "Segmentation fault".
What I scripted was: tar -zcvf /storage/external_storage/sda1/kodi.tar.gz /sdcard/Android/data/org.xbmc.kodi

try changing to the directory first

cd /storage/external_storage/sda1
tar -zcvf kodi.tar.gz /sdcard/Android/data/org.xbmc.kodi

Changed directory and wrote in the line of code and the exact same thing happened. Thoughts?

Can I tar the file on the box and then transfer the tar to my computer and gzip it there? Would that serve the same function?

Again why not just zip it. You have one file to move. You keep your directory structure. It works.
