    Unpacking *.img files

Been all over the internet yesterday and today trying to find the right tool for Windows to unpack an *.img file so I can try to work with it. (e.g. recovery.img; boot.img). I thought afptool would do it, but when I run it on the files I get a "failed" message.

Do I need to "create" an update.img file from the tablet as it is currently configured then work from that?

    Thanks in advance for help.

These are not standard IMGs like ISO files etc..

      Harold, you need linux period.

System.img is a disk image. My ROM is ext4. 1.3 was ext3. Stock is cramfs.
You mount these images in Lunix. You cannot do that in Windows.

AFPTool is for packing and uppacking update.img. When you unpack update.img you get all the individual .imgs (system, recovery, etc).

Thanks; got an invalid file message when I tried PowerISO.

Thanks, Bob, I was starting to sorta figure that out. Most of the stuff I found talked about cramfs and I knew that this one was ext3 and/or ext4. Toying with taking my old unused Compaq Armada and trying to turn it into a Unix machine..... It's running Win2000 now and hasn't been booted in over a year.

But why doesn't rkdump work from within Terminal on the tablet?

Aw, heck, downloaded Ubuntu, burned a CD and will try booting into it and seeing what kind of trouble I can get into. This is going way beyond simply manipulating Android image files.....

Harold you can download wubi installer for Ubuntu. Install it on Windows and it creates a dual boot for that and windows. Will be a lot faster than a live cd.

                Better yet.

                1) Download VirtualBox VM. Get the extensions too
                2) Download the straight Ubuntu ISO
                3) Setup the VM and install Ubuntu in that!

This is what I am using now. I can have Windows up and Ubuntu in a VM, transfer files, and do everything I need to do!
