    Big Lots Polaroid 7 1.2GHz PMID706 RK2928

Hi, Just saw this on big lots web site. Think buying.

Anybody knows the exact model number of it? Can it be rooted easily? Is it a good deal? Googling does not turn up much information. Any comments will be appreciated!

    Thanks in advance!

EDIT 1: The item detail is on the big lots normal item list page. It's a PMID706, see post #5.
EDIT 2: It uses an rk2928. No mini-usb, but a micro-usb. Can't charge off usb port.
Thanks to all the people working on this freaktab thread!

I looked at it yesterday actually. I forgot the model number but it wasn't the same as all the other ones (probably just branding is my guess). The only significant difference I see to this tablet is that they created a 'built-in' stand...big whoop.

      Could it be a pmid705x?

Thanks Elektrik! Is it a PMID705X like one at this link? The pictures look similar, but the camera on the linked page is at the top-right corner than top-left. Is the picture on big lots ad flipped? Does it have two cameras though the ad mentions only one? I see you have rooted 705X hope this is it.

Ok, it is a PMID706. Big lots normal item list shows this info, but not on the flyer. Believe a custom build for southern telecom. Info can be found on the support page of southern telcom.

Preloaded stores: amazon, 1mobile, opera 12, slide me.

          Processor: ARM Cortex-A8. Display 800x480. Mini-USB. 0.3MP camera.

A comparison of different polaroid models:
          Buttons:
702c/3c: home, reset, vol+, -, headphone, mini usb, micro sd
705/x: home, reset, mic, headphone, mini usb, micro sd,
706: (no home), reset, vol-, vol+, no mic, headphone, mini usb, micro sd,
          OS:
          705/x: android 4.0,
          706: android 4.1,
          Hardware:
          all: cortex-a8 1ghz, 512mb ddr3, opengl es 2.0, capacitive mt, 800x480, .3mp camera, wifi bgn

How to dump the original ROM from the tablet?

Hi, Elektrik: How do you make a dump of the original ROM? I guess that is needed since I can not find a downloadable image from southerntelecom. If things go wrong the original dump shall be reflashed to save us.

            Thanks.

The link you gave is simply the user guide. I wouldn't even want to venture to try to make a modified stock ROM until I knew the method in which this tablet applied updates (Ex. the PTAB8000, being such a weird creature, doesn't use Live Suite images for updates).

Do a google search and I'm sure you can find how. Here's an example way:

ALL WINNER A13 ROM DUMPER (Rom Backup) Download: A13_ROM_Dump_Tool.7z Instructions: -This tool dumps the firmware of your A13 onto your PC using ADB. -

Thank you! The approach I had found before seeing your link is to solder on a jtag header. It's great that you pointed to the pure software solution. It's apparent I don't know the right search words.

It's a RK2928. Remember Finless has a thread about how to mod it. Will check.

Need to reflash. Bricked. It's rk2926 not 2928.

Need to reflash. Anybody has an idea which uboot to flash? Which tool to use (rkflashtool, rkutil, rkflash.exe, rkupdate.exe, rkbatchtool, rkandroidtool)? I see a finless approach to short nand pin8/9 then bring it to mask rom mode, will give it a try.

What happened: Dumped the partitions using adb shell. Used the "rk29update.exe" from finless rom v1.5b for nextbook 7p12 to write the single image from cache partition back to the cache partition. It failed verification after writing. Then tried rkflash in linux to read the flash, got all zeros or gogus numbers. I guess that tool "rk29update.ext" is not the right version to use. A new bootloader is needed.

Opened the back cover The chip is a rk2926, not rk2928 as the cpuinfo reported. On the pcb there is a line reading "86V V2.1 20121228". Searched it should be a rk2926 tablet model 86V by yohosn.

Found out this thread about the rk2928 but i'm quite confused.
The link provided, unless something is wrong, points to a A13_ROM_Dump_Tool.7z which is for Allwinner processors.
Does the same works also with the rockchip 2928? AFAIK Rockchip and Allwinner are sometimes very different animals (have a pair of A10 tablets...).

Since for the rk2928 i'm getting shortly there's no official rom to dl a backup is the first things to do. Alternative ways for dump/restore are welcomed.

No, not the same tool. Check out the info at "Tech Room/ROM Hacks and Mods Development" and "Android TV Player Support/RK3066 Devices". PMID706 is rooted when bought. You can just dump the mtd partitions into files. The challenge is to find a tool to write them back, that I have not figured out. The worst is that once you used the wrong tool, you may need to open the box and short pins on the chip. My unit is bricked and I lost images that I dumped. Looking for someone to share the image files.

What device are you getting? I found the same devices labeled rk2926 tablet model 86V by yohosn are for about us$45 each on the net.

                              Hello!

I bought a 706 recently myself. I've tried to make root and system r/w using the instructions in the other PMID706 thread - which are, in my somewhat-less-than-humble opinion, rather vague. No go; about as far as I can get is to adb shell into the tablet, but can't successfully change the r/w permissions on the necessary directories to go further towards rooting it or adding Google Play.

I'll play withy the utility you mentioned earlier in the thread and see what kind of ROM dump I can come up with for you. No telling WHEN ST'll get around to putting the files to reflash the 706 on their site...
