    PIPO X8 freezing

    Hi all!

I just received my PIPO X8 last week and I want to use it as an always-on spotify server on windows. I would also like to always leave the screen on so I could skip songs with the touch screen as well as with my phones. Ive booted up the X8, installed all updates, spotify and chrome, disable all the automatic shutdown/sleep in power options.

Problem is, the X8 freeze randomly after a while. No artifacts on the screen and the only way to reboot is to pull the plug. I don't know when it happens exactly but I know that nothing specific is happening on it (nobody's using it).

I've checked windows event logs and I see a bunch of these warnings, it seems like it's the only thing worrysome I can see :

    Reported by component: Processor Core
    Error Source: Corrected Machine Check
    Error Type: Cache Hierarchy Error
    Processor APIC ID: 4

I've noticed that the time is always off when I reboot, it could be off by more than 12 hours, and I'm pretty sure it's not the time it has crashed but I'm not a 100% sure on this one.

Things I've tried so far :
    - update the BIOS following this thread : http://freaktab.com/forum/tv-player-...m-with-pipo-x8
    - Lift the device to improve airflow underneath
    - Shut down the screen automatically after 30 minutes so it generates less heat
    - Running a hardware temperature monitor tool, the temp on the CPU was 70c when the screen froze (which is high but below the Intel threshold and the threshold defined in the bios)

I'm running out of ideas here, I've seen that the error reported in the logs could be caused by a bad power supply or bad cpu. My next step was to get another power supply and hope it's just that, unless you guys have any ideas? I'll try writing to [email protected] too.

    Thanks!

Quick update, I've tried with a 12V 3A power supply I had lying around and it froze again...

Thanks for chiming in, ran the check for sanity and no malware found, I haven't installed anything else than chrome and spotify...

I'm beginning to think it might be an overheating problem, my Pipo X8 idles in the 70c and when the screen froze yesterday, I had HwMonitor opened and the highest temperature of one of the cores was 75c. You mentioned in this thread http://freaktab.com/forum/tv-player-...-z3736f-update that originally it was in the 70c when stressing the computer, do you remember what it was idling before your modifications?

I've ordered a thermal pad from aliexpress but it won't be here for a couple of weeks again

Chrome can be a little memory hungry in Windows have a look at Slimjet browser built from chrome.
Spotify a Win8 app or just a website. If they have an app from the Win8 store try that if not already.
          Can't recall idle temp,
Also you will have some Logs in Win8 that may point to the issue.
          Cheers

Chrome is installed but it isn't actually running... Spotify is a native windows app and there is no version from the win8 store unfortunately...

All I have from the logs is what I posted here about the Cache Hierarchy Error, rest of it is irrelevant for my problem... Since I'm idling in the 70c and yours was going to that temperature but while stressing, I'm starting to think there is a problem with heat dissipation on my unit. Hopefully I'll hear from Pipo soon about this...

            Thanks
