Ah, of course that does make sense - in hindsight! I have two players, I switch to my alternate which has a hand-install of the previous version. I figured it would be a Kodi software problem. I was fishing to see if there was a setting or option that I needed to change. And I suppose there was: disable hardware decoding.
As it happens, an update to the Kodi in the PlayStore came out. I updated and now it works fine.
Thanks for the info - I'll try to remember that for next time. I wonder where that option is set....
