    Bad News for Candians!

The two providers of Internet Services in Canada have decided to Block many sites (Netflix, etc). It seems that beca
use they have a Monopoly they can arbitrarily control what is accessed in this great Country! This is not China or North Korea so how is this allowed???
We all need to stand up and fight these guys....this is not how Information in a Free Country should be Controlled!!!

This is nonsense none of the providers can legally block the likes of Netflixs or any legitimate provider.

Not to mention there are more then merely the two service providers in Canada.
There are two main ones in Toronto which is bell and rogers but there also quite a few independent ones like teksavy.

Well actually they passed a law this year which says they can block any site that is considered as streaming copyrighted material and they are!!!
As for only two providers.....anyone who buys time for Internet (independent or not) Buys from Rogers/Bell so there are basically only two providers!!!
On another note can you tell me which software and method you used to get Openelec on MXIII running 4.4.2....Please

PS: they are actively blocking the US version of Netflix ( I assume by blocking Unblock us )....To make up for this they are also Offering their versions (Showme etc) for all platforms!!! Big of them HA!

teksavy is a cable reseller along with a few others and the same exists for a lot of the other phone/network infrastructure sellers....

as far as the legality of what they can or cant block people need to remember that here in Canada the CRTC oversee's all Allowable/Legal media services... believe me as a serious ex-satellite hacker im well aware of the legal changes the providers here in Canada have pushed the CRTC regulators to do change to protect the so-called "protect Canadian heritage" crap with their content rules and what not... some things that stream isn't probably a big concern to the providers but things like all the offshore movie streaming which is probably what a large amount of people with these streaming boxes really are after would be considered un-approved or illegal media under the CRTC regulations and im sure that as the legal providers in this country get more concerned about losing revenue to outside sources it wont be long before they band together and push for legal action to start to inhibit the ever growing off-shore media streaming industries.... It was the same with the old grey market satellite industry up here for many years till bell and cable company's lobbied to have the CRTC regulations changed and create laws on the books that allow the providers to go after people residing here in Canada...

we already know that CSEC like the American NSA has bullied week providers into allowing monitoring of data, so providers snooping and blocking really is and will become more of a reality leaving the mass's not using encrypted vpn tunnels or other technologies prey to the providers and whatever they decide to do...

Canada's not like most ofher democratic countries when it comes to any of the media services here as under the heritage act (which is really stupid) the few legal providers have a real monopoly protected under the goverments CRTC body...

who knows when and just how far they will push but reality dictates that when it comes to money and profits the providers here will push for tighter control...

                Enough of this silliness people.

Be it the us ,Canada or England all providers have the right to block illegal content and its been that way for ages but they rarely actively try do to the sheer cost versus gain.
Canada is not blocking the us version of netflixs and it never has.
Netflix made the software not to work in Canada as they didn't want to get in trouble with the government.

.Have they been helping try and block the use of it through vpn and the like yes although only just enough to look like they care.

Its also a triopoly not a monopoly as most seem to think.

As for the crtc that's basically correct as they are corrupt as hell.

Only good thing is thanks to the public becoming more knowledgeable about internet these days changes have been happening that are more in favor of the people.

There not blocking US Netflix because of piracy rules but do to content copyright laws.

Basically Netflix gets the rights for said tv show or movie but it often only covers the country they are in and they would have to pay more to show it in another country.
This is costly to put it mildly and because of this much of the content is US only and only shows in other countries when it becomes cheap enough.

Netflix in Canada is subject to CRTC's regulations which ALL legal Canadian Providers must follow... In Canada under the Heritage Act no more then 25% of any legal providers' over all content can be None Canadian Based... which is why Netflix has a Canadian Service... Netflix's Canadian data center serves up what's been negotiated between them and the CRTC... Its the same basic reason why the American Satellite services like DirectTV and Dish-Net are illegal up here... The Heritage Act is what controls Canadian content media wise in everything from music to publications to tv and any provider trying to get access to the Canadian market must meet the CRTC's regulations on how much Canadain content is allowed in their overall service they want to provide... Phones are another protected Market which is why none of the big American phone proiders are up here...

What Neftlix negotiates with the movie studios or digital rights owners is something else and has nothing to do with the why's and hows of things getting blocked up here... when it comes to Canadians and media content we are all getting screwed with over pricing and poor value but the law is the law and this is not the USA where things are much more open and most of whats been said is probably coming from people not resident up here and lacking in understanding of how the laws work in Canada... No company will ever get Legal Canadian Content provider status without following the enforced content rules...

SO.... once the Legal Canadian content providers start complaining to the goverment about losses due to illegal streaming they will be allowed to block whatever they want and the Satellite industry is a perfect example of what eventually will happen as there is NO legal sat service here in canada other then bell and shaw...

who knows when any of this could happen but its legally withing the law for them to block what dosn't comply to Canadian law and how the service is delivered here in Canada...

Canada is NOT the USA where anyone can be a provider and digit rights is the only concern...
