You can flash using the sdcard method, the second link is for that but they just provide the tools to do it yourself. I didn't want to waste time figuring how to do so, so i just downloaded using the first link which is a .zip file containing a .img file that i used to flash to my box using the burning tool without problem.
Hmmm ok ill create the file to flash using the sdcard/twrp method and upload it sometime later today for you to try it.
Reverting back to old firmware is not a problem and is always easier if you restore a twrp backup.

There are instructions in .pdf format that used to be provided with the firmware update links for using the burning tool but on geekbuying webpage it is also explained.

1) Will flashing it blow away my recovery, i.e. TWRP?

TWRP works fine booting from sdcard. I dont have it installed on emmc

TWRP can be booted from an SDcard? Is that explained in the TWRP thread? I thought TWRP HAD to be actually installed?

NM. I see it explained in Bob's instructions for his finless ROM. I'd never looked at it before..

Yes firmware for S812 devices can run on S802 devices no problem. With the 316k4 rom i posted wifi and Ethernet works fine. I think in other roms like the lollipop beta and 202k4 wifi doesnt work for our device, because the proper modules for it are not included in the kernel.
If you read the beta lollipop firmware for MXIII-G thread posted by Oman you will see people commenting about flashing that and other roms on S802 devices.

hi does the 116k4 fix the tronsmart mxiii S802 2 gb ram, ethernet problem? i only geting 59 mb/s out of 100 mb/s,
also have a problem when internet disconnected from routre , when i try to reconnect, the wifi stops working and crashs

Kitkat there not many lollipop firmwares out there since they really dont make much difference on these devices.

I have and S82(B) box and spent several hours last weekend trying to install this firmware; the major problem was finding an OTG cable that would actually fit into the box correctly (thank you Lenovo!). After flashing, however, the box froze at the "Tronsmart" Logo and refused to budge. After several further attempts, I went back to the stock 112K firmware which installed without any problem using the OTG flash.

Does anyone think that it is worth trying the SD card method or is it that this is some clone which will not work.

The objective of flashing the new ROM was to use Kodi 15 and TVMC. Both of these, however, work without any problem on the 112K ROM, which was not the case with the v13 XBMC which was continually freezing.
