Cannot navigation in the android system recovery menu

Hi all, I've got mx3 which is working with the suppled  remote control, that is until I go to the recovery menu. The up/down buttons don't respond, in fact none of the buttons on the remote respond.  This means no flashing, am I overlooking something silly? Hope someone  can point me in the right direction.

Connect a usb keyboard? Perhaps

Thanks for responding , will try them on the weekend, over reliance on blue tooth mouse/keyboard set up, so will have a dig around for them. Hopefully it's that simple.

Good news the keyboard worked. Bad news trying to flash it said something about not recognizing sd card and fail. So rebooted fine, but can't  get back in to recovery mode. Even a factory reset fails. The box still boots with the orginal firmware on it. Have I deleted the recovery partition buy mistake ?
