RK3288 SoCs throttle the CPU when heat approches unsafe levels. I assume AMLs do too, but do not know.
Excessive heat can lead to poor performance, instability, unreliability and shorten component life. Cooler is always better. Heat is an adversary to electronics. Some have used laptop coolers under their boxes to improve cooling.
So while your box may not be reaching damaging levels of heat, if you can cool it down, you and it will be better off.
