Those are some nasty "business" practices you mentioned, I would think the Tronfy name was used to confuse consumers, so too the use of X6 for their 3368 offering. I accept that Zidoo is one of the few top-tier companies and it was not my intent to confuse Zidoo with the appearent fly-by-night Tronfy brand.
Better to stay away from Tronfy.
I only now realize they use both Tronsmart and Zidoo models to confuse people.
Better to support manufacturers with a track record and manufacture themselves with their own engineers.
Oem Brand TV Boxes are going to cause trouble for people when they have firmware problems that will then never get the proper fixes.
Geekbuying tries to sell as many TV Boxes as possible even if low quality, so don't think because they have a cheaper model again it is just as good as a more expensive one.
Some boxes are more expensive because they use higher quality hardware, manufacturers have to pay engineers for testing, firmware fixes & licence costs which fly-by-night resellers don't have.

I would say a RK3368 box is good for someone to get on a budget.
Rockchip is now also making their own Kodi, which works very good.
    4K video playback, HD Audio.
The RK3288 boxes are still the best CPU & GPU wise with Linux dual-boot support.

AMLogic X4 devices - Your not sure of the kind of firmware updates it's going to get. Also dependant on Team Kodi to fix issues for Kodi to work properly. Firmware SDK not easily available for developers for custom firmware. Color output might be a little better than Rockchip. Plus point - it might be cheaper and have fewer software issues out of the box.

I like that budget boxes are available through GB and others, lets the buyer decide what is good enough for their needs. As the buyer gets to choose, they also take responsibility for determining what device is suitable. Buyers need to realize this.
I have the UT3, love it. That love is based on the qualities you sited, robust, well-engineered hardware and good support from the company, developers and users. These qualities have resulted in a very versatile little box.
On the other hand, I have a budget box. Universally inferior throughout, however, it works well to deliver her Yoga videos on an older 720 TV. In the interest of full disclosure, I got the budget box for free. But for a while, I felt I had still payed too much.
Both can be a suitable choice I suppose, but if going budget, keep those expectations realistic. Either way, reading around Freaktab before buying, will almost allow a buyer to predict their own future. Sure did in my case.

anyone had any luck with this box?

I am trying to get kodi to passthrough truehd and dtshd audio but no luck yet

So far I have got TWRP on the box and managed to lash a partially ported Zidoo rom which gives all the options but passthrough sound only hisses at me :-(
