Digital photoframe - use Screensaver / Daydream to show pictures when idle---mk808B Plus

I have a MK808B Plus and I want it to be a digital photo frame when its not in active use. I've used a few firmwares (currently droid-tv's finless 1.1) and all have the daydream setting missing from settings -> display menu. My understanding of Android is that it should have daydream mode and this could be used for creating a photo carousel. I can even see a daydream basic app in the firmware bundle.

The stock firmware and its derivatives include a "screensaver" which shows promo images for product features (miracast, dlna etc). These images are in /system/media/screensaver/images. I can add my own images to this folder and after a reboot they become part of the screensavers carousel. However I have more images than I care to add to this folder.

I have installed photo carousel apps, but they need to be executed explicitly. I want something that auto starts.

I can't find any discussion on this topic and I figure it would be a common desire to use a media box for this purpose. So perhaps I am missing something significant. Can someone help point me in the right direction on how this can be done?
