help to upgrade this box

hi ive been given the task of trying to get this box working better than it has since it was bought, it belongs to my friend, it will be solely used for xbmc/kodi
it is nothing like the box I use a minix x7, and looks like this box isn't running a true android version, how can I improve this box with a custom rom? or higher version stock rom, and links for how to's would be fsantastic and links to any files needed to accomplish this, as this box isn't mine I don't want to brick it and have to buy my pal replacement

hope someone can shed some light on how to get this thing working better than it is at the moment, as it seems it can only manage to work with xbmc gotham, any higher and it becomes unresponsive, and hope I can flash a proper android os, as the version it has installed is not good

that box is from we acemax, and it was manufactured years ago(2012, 2013..), the amlogic first version amlogic M3 , single core. then upgrade to MX DUAL CORE, now it is quad core. amlogic s812....you need to upgrade and buy one new box.....
the box on your hands still android 4.0...if you prefer using xbmc only, can try j1nx linux version(i think still frodo) , now no developers do any ROM on it
