    Confused by simple stuff

    Hi Guys,

First post here so go easy on me.

Having been an avid user of Kodi (15.2) on my Macbook, I am now looking to take the next step and buying an android box. After much deliberation, I bought the following:

I have been advised the best thing to do is flash the unit with OpenElec 5.0.8 - is there any problem with flashing it with OE 6.0?

i believe you install Kodi after flashing with OE - what version of Kodi does 5.0.8 and 6.0 support?

    Thanks,

Be careful what you flash on that box. This one is particularly confusing because there are many different boxes labeled "MXQ". As for your model, this version of OE shold work just fine: http://freaktab.com/forum/tv-player-...mk808b-and-mxq
But be aware that other releases (like the one from a russian guy named kerber) may be only for other MXQ boxes. OE 6.0 was not built for your MXQ box yet afaik. That's probably the only reason why 5.0.8 was advised to you.
OE is a an operating system that is basically kodi on a very basic linux foundation, which means that kodi is already integrated. OE 5 comes with kodi 14, OE 6 comes with kodi 15.

That is brilliant. Really appreciate your help with that.

What is this other thing that is being branded about dubbed 'Superceleron'?

Lastly - I noticed that some people have left the original Android version installed on the box and then installed OE 5.0.8.20 on an SD card thus resulting in a dual-os boot setup . Would you advise I do this or do you think I should flash the box itself to 5.0.8.20?

Just wondering - if I should cancel the order for the box and get something that supports OE 6 or is it still buggy (with newer box models?)

      Many thanks sir

I only have a MK808B+, so i only use the OE builds from kszaq (the one i linked to in my previous post). I can't tell you if 6.0 is buggy. I think it is very likely that kszaq releases OE 6.0 really soon. He has always been very dedicated to OE development, but he recently got married and so he lacks the time to build OE 6.0 at the moment.
Superceleron is a custom android rom. I never tried it myself.
Dual boot is a good option if you want to keep the ability to use android apps. But if you just want to use your box as a kodi media player, you won't need android.

          Phinc, thanks for the information.

I ended up buying the MXQ S85 Red Stripe and flashed it with OE 5.08.20 from KSZAQ and the playback is brilliant. I had problems with choppy video playback but managed to sort that out. The MK808B+ you have - what version of OE you got on it?

Curiously, are there any Android TV boxes that are working flawlessly with OE 6.0? Are there any major differences between the official OE releases and the ones that KSZAQ releases?

I also have the 5.08.20 version. Official OE uses a much newer linux kernel then the OE for android boxes. That is because the chip manufacturer (AMLogic in that case) did not release the kernel source code for a later kernel. But i guess you won't notice any differences in normal usage. You might run into driver problems if you want to use USB peripherals like TV tuners because the drivers provided by OE team are for newer kernel version.

EDIT: You can check here for OE 6.0 releases for android boxes: http://xbmc.ru/forum/showthread.php?t=4587&page=205
From a quick look, it seems like it works for you box, but without wifi.

I dont use it for anything other than Kodi and its respective addons. TV Tuners and streaming over WiFi isnt any use to me at all (for now).

I took a look at that link and I was confused which one was for my box.

Im assuming the one I need is this one -
              OpenELEC-Amlogic.arm-MXQ-6.0.0.2.zip 24-Nov-2015 12:16 119M

If i upped to this release, can I flash back down to 5.0.8.20?

tar files are for updating OE (put the tar file in the update folder and reboot) and zip files are for a fresh install via recovery. You can always downgrade to a lower version with a zip file but you may run into problems when you try do downgrade with a tar file.
