Linux on a MXQ S805 (All Black)

I am currently planning to run Linux on my TV box MXQ S805.
I am not especially interested in TV applications, I just want a kind of Raspberry PI, but having everything on board from the beginning including a nice case ;-)
I have discovered on the website http://www.linuxminipc.com/ a download that might fit my device:
    -ubuntu-mate-15-04-s805-standard-0_95_Beta.img.xz
Unfortunately there is no instruction on how to proceed with the given file and the people there don't seem to be willing to provide support.

The file extension xz is unknown to me, maybe one should cut that extension and try to get the image on an SD card?
But before I do that, I would try to ask your for advice from more experienced people.
    How would you proceed?
Maybe someone can givea hint, or even discourage me to do something that will break my device for an eternity?
Thank you very much for your experience.

    regards
    RIN

Hello, Welcome to Freaktab. Have a look through the Amlogic thread. There are OpenELEC variants and Linux for some S805 devices. I am posting from my phone and link posting is tedious, so I will try to point to something specific when I get to a PC. Till then, browse the link above.
    Best wishes.
    Also look here.

Thank you, I just found incidentally how to proceed: XZ is a compression format an can be extracted with 7zip.
Then I got an .img file that will be written to the SD card.
I will let you know how it worked.
That file promises to be a full blown UbuntuLXDE, not a JEOS distribution trimmed down for TV players as OpenELEC is.
I will let you know how it worked.

I have very little experience on the S805. However, I enjoy Ubuntu 15.04 on my UT3(RK3288). It is very quick, 15 second boot. About 18 seconds when booting from SD card.
Having little time on the S805, I wonder how it will handle a full-blown Linux. I think many choose the JEOS option for resource-limited devices, such as the S805.
I will be interested in learning of your results.
If I remember correctly, the Odroid C1(+) uses an S805 SoC. Have a look over there and you may find additional info/experience using Linux and the S805.
        Have fun!

My fun was pretty limited. I have a bricked device now.
Let us see if I can revive it....

I am sorry to hear that. Do you have the boxes original F/W? There are several versions of that box, not all MXQ F/Ws work on all MXQs.
            Good luck. Keep us posted

First of all I must reestablish a bootloader.
I tried with a USB A to A cable from a USB drive, that did not work. Hope to find suitable instructions.
