Finally got my parts in and upgraded my HSF on my device. Check out the pictures here http://www.freaktab.com/album.php?albumid=26 and also, it stays nice and chill now even running 3D games and video web streams. And the fan is silent, which I wasn't expecting.

Nice. Thanks for sharing. I see you went with external antenna. Unfortunately, I have the V3.0 board which only uses the pin antenna so I'd end up having to find an external antenna to mod in, but then again my Wifi is getting pretty good reception regardless (and surprisingly). You can see what I did here: http://www.freaktab.com/showthread.p...Pic-intensive)

And where in the world did you get that itty bitty fan? LOL. I went with a 35x35x10 one so that I'd have an easier time mounting it. What's the power rating on it? The one I got was 5V 0.23A and they are fairly quiet.

modDIY.com and its a 5v 0.08a LOL. It basically runs off of the static electricity in the air.

I'm having the exact same issue. How's the mod working for you? Any shut down's since?

The mod worked perfectly, no shut downs, temps stay cool, whereas before it was too hot to touch.

Just curious, but has anyone just tried the external fan without replacing the heat sinks?

An external fan is more than adequate to keep the unit reasonably cool. Before I modded my own unit I had a fan pointed right at it and it held its own fine even when running some 720p/1080p content. The only real problem I saw with a fan only option is that you are pushing air in but there isn't adequate flow-through for the air to escape.

So, I've had it running now with the mod installed for more than 10 days, no random shutdowns, no heat coming from the device at all actually. So I'd say my mod worked out perfectly. Now, I am not one who has any downloaded media at all, so until I get some movies ripped, or downloaded, and try to stream them, I won't be able to test out the video playback, but games seem to run smoothly, although I never had any luck with my xbox 360 controller in any game other than riptide gp. I am still just patiently awaiting a ROM update which fixes all of the other outstanding issues with my device. I kind of wish I had just sprung for the Ouya and didn't waste my time and money on this stick at the moment, but I will wait and see what the ROM developers put out in the future.

Would you mind trying some 1080 content from YouTube?

                          stock 908

stock 908 here. after several hours of streaming video (through google chrome) on my mk908, the unit crashed, leaving the screen multi-colored.

the device was piping hot, damn near too hot to touch.

i cracked it open to cool off faster.

the 908 has a heatsink covering an entire side (and chip I assume), but the rubberized case was inhibiting airflow across the heatsink, rendering it useless in my opinion. heatsink was scalding hot.

i'm considering rehousing unit in a larger enclosure with a fan (or 2).

                              I need help.

Here's my mod, but i need help. The fan works and blow cold air in from the top, through the side exhaust, and out to the bottom. However the fan runs at full speed at all time(5.2v) and its loud. How do i slow it down a bit? I tried connecting the 5v fan to a 3.2 power source inside and it didn't run. I definitely need a usb power controller somehow. (even better if I want to take it step high, I would want a sensor controller for the fan) any electrician here?

EDIT: Possible solution, is to install a resistor. However, I don't have the knowledge to know what resistor I should get. http://www.svc.com/zmrc100.html

Here's what it looks like, so far.

Hi, I don't know if this can help. I use a 12V fan from an ancient hdd enclosure and run in it on a 9V DC charger. It runs completely silent. Also, it blows the air out, not towards the stick, allowing the air to leave the case and cool the dongle. I use no additional heatsink. That way, I didn't have to cut the plastic cover as it's already got small holes to let the hot air out. The result is more than satisfactory, at least in my case. Cheers, G
