    Backing up QC802 stock ROM?

I've found the following tutorial on how to update the ROM of my newly acquired QC802: http://blog.geekbuying.com/index.php.../#.UcCKnZyQVAE

However before attempting this, I would like to make a backup of my current stock ROM. Question is - how do I do that?

As a side note: The reason that I want to update is that I want to be able to run XBMC - if I can't do that with the new custom ROM please advise . I tried installing the official XBMC 12.2 but it wouldn't start.

To backup your device use RomDump.

I backed up my device using RomDump. I had to modify the system to get it to work right though, I created a symlink from SDCARD to mnt/extern-sd, if you don't do this RomDump will fail because it is trying to Dump the files to a non existent path.

The RomDump will give you a boot.img, recovery.img and system.tar. The system.tar needs to be converted into a system.img. To do this you need to create a ext2 filesystem file and migrate the tar's contents into the ext2 filesystem. Creating an ext2 filesystem is pretty easy using linux, the hard part is getting the image size just right.

I can't spend the time detailing out the entire process but Google is your friend and would love to help you with this

Thank you for the pointers, sabbycon. It sounds a bit user unfriendly, but if that's only way to go, then I'll have to make it work.

I must admit that I thought you could use ClockworkMod like I do on my phone. But I guess that CWM isn't available for the QC802 yet?

        You can... http://www.google.com/url?q=http%3A%...X5aaglP6maT1zg

Use the generic CWM for rk3188.

So, did you have any luck with the generic version of the recovery linked above? I am considering giving it a go.

I didn't have the guts to try it out yet
Also I found a version of XBMC that works with my QC802 without any modifications, so the need for an update isn't that imminent right now.

Nice. Well I did. I've got a UG007B and it made a very nice brick when I restarted. I used the flash_image command from the console. When I restarted all I got was a grey screen and it would not respond to anything, had to short the nand and flash with batch tool. Back up and running now with NEOTV CROM for UG007B. I'm thinking it flashed the wrong partition. I will try again with flash tool and see if I can just flash the recovery partition.
