To get into recovery and wipe box. Power off the box then take batteries out of controller for just a few seconds. While holding the back button and center dpad connect power and continue to hold buttons until recovery loadsPrahjister ****MK808(nonB)****MK808B V5****MK808B Plus****UBOX R89**** CX919****MK808B Pro****Nexbox N9****Eny Em95****Matricon Q2****Tanix TX5 Pro****

I'm thinking about getting a mi box, mainly for the cast function.
Not sure I can handle a remote control without mute button though...
And I'd like to sideload some android apps that are not designed for Android TV, so up/down/etc. buttons probably don't work for that.
Question: does this box work well with any generic air mouse with usb dongle?

Yes, I can second that. I'm using an AERB airmouse-cum-keyboard, with no issues. The Mi Box continues to delight - it's a very competent implementation of Android TV on good, if not spectacular, hardware. Its merit seems to be how well optimized the whole package is - few, if any, glitches.
Thanks, Prahjister, for the tip about accessing recovery - that works! When I asked Xiaomi how to do that, I got this reply: " "We regret to inform you that Mi Box do not have the Recovery mode. Also, would like to inform you that we do not suggest our customers to root their device as it may cause
malfunctioning of your device.." They also said "we do not provide any firmware for Mi Box", so we're on our own if we want to tinker.. If we ever get TWRP on there, the first step would be to backup the factory rom since we're not going to find it anywhere.

I just picked one up at my local Walmart for $69 US. I have had no problems installing most apps. SPMC users will need to disable the Media Codec video acceleration but it's OK with Media Codec surface. It is a hair slower than the Nvidia Shield, but then the price is far lower too.
I added the HAL Launcher and placed it into recommendations - works well. One thing I noticed was that there was no widget to "sleep", restart, or power off. Seems like it should be possible to add this, but I'm not the sharpest crayon in the box on such things.
The Leanback launcher version is a later version the one used in the Shield TV, and I wondered if the older Leanback Launcher as used in the Shield TV might have the Power button widget? I like using my old Bluetooth Amazon Fire Stick remote control as it just plain is easier for my partially disabled hand to hold then the stock remote, and that's why I'm looking for a way of getting a power button widget like the one in the Shield TV. I did extract that older version Leanback Launcher apk, but since it's an older version of what's installed currently, I doubted it would work.
Anyone know of a fairly easy root for this box? A few apps I'd like to have wouldn't install, and that might be the lack of root, or perhaps it's a hardware issue. I don't know without root.
All in all though, in IMO this is quite a decent little box; especially if you use a USB hub to add additional ports. Then even SD cards worked for me with an SD card reader.
So, a Shield TV (kinda...sort of..almost) for a budget price. Not bad!

Xiaomi Mi Box’s Android Oreo update is finally rolling out
According to multiple users on Reddit, the Android Oreo update for the Xiaomi Mi Box is finally rolling out. We already suspected it would be arriving soon after beta testers started to receive the update early last month and it wasn’t labeled anywhere as being an actual beta release. Interestingly, the device never actually received Android Nougat despite being promised to receive it shortly after launch. There was a public beta released 11 months after its launch that you could sideload, but nothing further ever came after that. There’s even better news for device owners, as the update appears to be rolling out globally. We’ve got some screenshots below of how it looks, but first, you can take a look at the new interface in the video below.
Now that you’re familiar with how the new interface looks, you can also take a look at the screenshots of the initial setup. Users are reporting that basically everything, as expected, is there, including the Google Assistant which wasn’t previously available. Back in March we first got a proper look at it publicly when Xiaomi and Nvidia demoed their Android TV sets running Oreo, though the Nvidia shield got the update a little bit sooner.

Along with the Google Assistant, you can expect to see the new task switcher, as shown above, the latest security enhancements, HDR, and Picture in Picture mode too. Google Assistant is one of the major new features in this update as it means you can control your smart home from your TV, along with benefitting from all the other features the Assistant offers. If you’re on the sideloaded Android Nougat version we mentioned earlier, you’ve got nothing to worry about as those devices are also receiving the OTA update. Users in the USA, Canada, Portugal, and Australia all have confirmed they have received the update, so it’s unclear if right now it’s in a staged rollout or not. Let us know in the comments if you have the Android Oreo update on your Xiaomi Mi Box!
