It leaves a lot of unknowns...biggest is if plexpass needed. I wish they would bring live TV with hdhomerun and recording like emby to Plex. But hdhomerun DVR might have this covered whenever it finally comes out. If Plex and hdhomerun DVR work at same time it will be a game changer.

Only downside so far. Can't side load channels. Maybe with root. But I don't want to jeopardize updates with rooting

Kodi 17 Alpha now has DTS, DTS-HD, DTS-X, Dolby TrueHD and Dolby ATMOS support added to, so another plus point for the Shield.

So is kodi or spmc the way to go for the shield. I thiught kodi Android development stopped and spmc is the way to go.

That would depend on the SOC being used.

There is some info from the Kodi team about Android in their latest update of 17.

Good read Bluesmanuk. Its fact now that they want manufactures to code to the android 5.1 or better API. We all know many wont go this route. (Its actually the simple route for them but because so many devices now i agree with thier path they choose)
So that is anwser they are not dropping support they are telling Android venders code to googles 5.1 or 6.0 API and device will work fine in kodi. Now lets see what manufactures actually do that. We all know why they dont costs.
Many devices now mk902ii/Shield/Mk68 /Ugoos/neox5/minix5 (yes they still work lol) mk80 no it doesnt work lol.

I think that you are likely right.

It could open the door for a vendor to go down the right route and sell more boxes though, which would then force others to follow suit or lose business.
