I started out in IT about 26 years ago and worked for a bank. Well, a whole lot of PC's were installed with Dual-Floppy (Those 5 1/4" black disks). The MD of the bank's secretary got taught to make a backup of her work every Friday and to check her backup every Monday. If I recall correctly it was on a 286 with DOS and Word Perfect.

Well the story goes like this, every Friday she did her backup and labeled the backup with a typed sticker, but every Monday the restore did not work.

I spent hours on checking why this did not work and in desperation I sat with her one Friday to check what she did. The procedure was as follows:
    1. The lady took a fresh Floppy and did the backup.
    2. Once finished, she took it out and stuck a fresh label on the disk.
    3. She then took the disk and rolled it into her Olivetti typewriter and typed a label onto the disk.
    ... some people...

    and that is my story
    kind regards

I needed to replace the heatsink on my CPU a few weeks ago. The fan on the old one wouldn't spin, who knows why, but the CPU temps were still decent. But, I decided to replace it anyway. My mobo is an old LGA 775 and the clips for the CPU heatsink are just impossible to get just right. I put way too much pressure on one clip and slipped and cut my hand on the little metal heatsink fins. Man, are those things sharp. Be careful when replacing those heatsinks, kids.

          Hi.
This Beelink BT7 Mini PC seems to be very nice piece of HW. I'm former journalist working years ago for IT tech magazine. Now I'm working for one of the biggest Telco company as test automation lead. In general I do find it fun e.g to mod all my e.g. routers with OpenWRT, build Xeon LGA 775 computers, end of course installing KODI on everything that can handle it (also for friends and family). So IMO I have right skills. If by some accident you choose me I could create nice in-depth review of this device.

Regarding the tech story a lot of people know that I do work with computers, and they still like to exploit it to make them a favor. They used to say "hey it is so simple to you", please fix my rotten laptop. I found it annoying as it started to consume too much of my free time. I guess this story is one of few that made me to quit helping other with IT stuff for nice price or some beer.

I was asked to fix computer that cannot connect to Internet. What was quite strange that this girl completely dismantled her computer. I have no clue why she did this, but she said she just got pissed. She was able to extract motherboard from the case! I was expecting that this PC would just require the reinsertion of e.g graphics cards and other stuff. That was knowledge that I had from brief description, but that wasn't the case. I have been given a huge box full of computer parts. Actually there was more parts than needed to assemble one computer in this box. I have been promised that I will get some extra cache for fixing this mess. So I have agreed to do it anyway - it meant for me more work that I have assumed.

Next day I had put all best specs parts back into the case, and reinstalled basic software. I called her that I have finished and she can pick up her computer. So she took it to her place and I thought that this is over. However few hours later she has called me that this PC still wouldn't connect to the Internet and she want her money back. Actually it wasn't normal call. She shouted and used so many f.. words.. that was rage. I have checked it earlier and most of the drivers and software e.g. OpenOffice have been downloaded from the net. To sum it up I have asked her to cool down and agreed to come to her location and check what was the problem.

At her place I have booted PC, and checked that it had LAN connection, but yes Internet hasn't been working. So I have asked about her ISP provider, does it gave her some DSL modem. She wasn't quite familiar with routers and DSL modems so she wasn't actually able to tell me anything useful. I have followed cable from her PC and found router installed. It even had separate DSL modem connected and powered on. The only missing thing was cable to connecting modem to phone line.

I was surprised she was able to torn apart her PC, so I have assumed that she has some basic tech skills. What is worse she still insisted that I haven't fixed her computer and in general she was rude. I have asked about modem box that ISP gave to her. Naturally there was a proper cable in the box. I have connected it, checked if Internet is working, and just left.

            Hi
My story happened a few years ago, when i was asked to try to recover some documents and pictures from a crashed PC belonging to someone, that had heard I might be able to help out.
The PC had already been checked by a renowned service site/store, where they found the PC unrepairable, and reccomended the owner to buy a new one.
So far everything was fine, and they where planning to buy a new one, but since they had a lot of pictures and documents on the PC, they asked me to have a look to try to recover at least some of them.

I received the PC. and placed the harddrive in another PC, and managed to recover quite a few pictures and documents running a recovery SW. (Dispite tthat part of the disk seemed to have quite a few broken sectors)

When the recowery was done, we started to check if I had managed to save the most important documents/pictures.
The first few pictures we checked was of cars and various nature pictures, where the owner of the PC, claimed that this wasn't their pictures????
After checking a few more "nice" pictures, we suddenly got several hardcore porn pictures++.
On several of the pictures there was a man, which the PC owner(more or less in schock) recognized as the service technician who had looked at the PC earlier:-)
"What was he doing on the pictures on their PC"
Apparently the service technician had swapped the harddrive in the PC, with one of his own broken ones, since the PC was more or less dead anyway. (Bad idea:-))

So to make a long story short.
The PC owner got a copy of all the recovered files, and requested a meeting with the store, to get their side of things, and hopefully get back the correct drive so they could try to get teir files recovered from that disk.
The right drive where nowhere to be found, but they receivced a new PC free of charge, for the loss of the drive and to keep quiet about the insident;-)

I'm driving in the car with my friend (who is a girl) and she was telling me some story which I don't recall because she bla bla blabs all the time so I sort of tuned out, until I heard her say ->

And I was really upset so I said "I'm not giving you my bag", but I said it strongly, like you know, H1 "I'm not giving you my bag".
I couldn't believe what I heard. That has to be the geekiest thing I ever heard come out of anyone's mouth, yet alone this girl which I never expected to hear something like that. Needless to say, I couldn't stop laughing, which was highly inappropriate due to the context of the story.

This is as much a story about poetic justice, as it is about tech....meanwhile, sometime last century...

Ages ago when I was in the Navy, I had just assumed shore duty. I was a lowly E3(3rd from the bottom, rank wise...total Noob). I was the lowest ranking and least senior of the department personnel, and by a lot. My new job was assisting in the maintenance of a surface ship simulator. The simulator was often in use, so I had a lot of "study" time. One day I brought in an old audio preamp to work on. The senior chief was the head of our department. He had no problem with me working on something not-work-connected, he saw it as a way to advance my skills.

After a couple of days I had the preamp working and was bragging a bit, when my leading petty officer (guy just under the senior chief) said, "Great, I have a TV you can work on next". I replied, "Sorry, I don't work on TVs, I don't have any CRT experience". He said, "But you fixed the stereo thing". I replied, "It is not a TV". A Couple of weeks passed, and almost everyday he asked me to fix the TV, I resisted.

I came in one morning and the senior chief was not there, turns out he had taken a half-day for personal business. This left my LPO in charge. After he trained a class on the simulator, he entered the work space and was carrying his ancient, black and white "portable", TV and said, "Today's the day, I know you can fix it, so do it". I cautioned him further, saying, "I don't work on TVs, got no experience"! He replied, "Well you are working on this one". Finally buckling under the constant intimidation, I moved the TV to the bench and removed the back. Pulled up the huge old oscilloscope, it weighed a ton, had its own cart. We had a couple of nice Tektronix O'scopes, but they were in the calibration lab.

In an attempt to caution him further, I said, "I don't have a schematic or SAMs for the TV, so even if I knew what I was doing, it would be a challenge", he said, "Bullshi#, make it work". So I grounded the scope to the TV's chassis(Oops!), energized the TV and picked up the O'scope probe. I reached in to touch the probe to something, I don't recall what. No sooner than the probe made contact, there was a bright flash of light, a startlingly loud popping sound and resulting cloud of smoke. While I'm checking to make sure I still had all of my fingers, he actually said, "What happened, did you fix it"? While looking at my shoes, I said meekly, "I think I blew it up". He threw up his arms and took a deep breath, no doubt fixin' to chew me a new one. It was at this time the senior chief walked back in, seeing the smoke still lingering and me standing there holding the probe, he said, "What happened here.....are you working on his dang TV"? Before I could say anything, my LPO exclaimed, "He just blew up my TV"! The senior chief looked at the LPO and said, "Well.., then.., get it out of here, it stinks". As he walked by the senior chief to carry out the TV, the senior chief said to him, "You big dummy, he said he didn't work on TVs, that will be the end of it"!

The moral of this story? When someone says they don't know how to do something, best not to try an disprove it, by forcing them to work on your stuff.

One upon a time, i was buying an electronics at my local electronics store. I don't usually buy it there.
I was waiting for a delivery of my product (They have got quite big stock house) and i have become absorbed about an man nearby, who was complaining about his new pc, bought there.
It was a PC which he assembled by himself. He complained about a CPU, which was not working or runs hot. Not sure. An asistent told him that he has to use a thermal paste. He than showed up that he uses a whole paste on CPU. But not on the top. On the bottom of the CPU between a motherboard and the CPU. I tried not to laugh, the asistent told him that they can't claim the goods. He was angry, but leaved. When he leaved i go to an asistent and we chatted and laugh together

I work with full motion flight simulators. I don't understand they insisted on using firewire connections for this specific system rather than Industrial Ethernet (Realtime Protocol). The 30 systems are connected in a long loop. The cards and cables and a nightmare. One system goes down and the entire chain can't communicate.

The Beelink looks like a great system! Would be fun to test out!

Well Ive got a funny but reality filled true tale of the days of house calls on Apple 2e plus etc. I was making a few bucks on the side repairing and cleaning up systems as the wave of new processors began their flooding of the market. So I had reached that point where i had a few regular clients whose systems were on the "Route of Alienism" as i called it because i lived remotely and came to town twice a week to check on any tweaks or upgrades they may need. And of course the delicious Pies the Motherly clients insisted i eat since they were getting such good care taken of their systems and the conversation during my visit as well. Anyways , one of my favorite but very needy clients called me in a huff because she couldn't get her computer to run at all. it started, made some noise, but nothing after that. She hadn't been able to play her casino game online and she needed my expertise Now. So even though about five of her previous emergencies hadn't bee remotely close to the hell fire spewing outa her computer as she had sometimes described, I decided to get off the couch and away from my cozy fire (did i mention it was winter in the area and i lived outside of town a couple klicks.) and proceeded to walk in and save her computer from a drop off the building if she could've carried it up there. well I get there and she takes me to her baby and says she just pushed the power button the light came on for a few seconds and nothing , the screen was black and she was scared to do any more than she thought she had miraculously accomplished in damaging it by hitting the power button. So, remember that Pie I mentioned, well she went to get us a slice while i was going to start the process of figuring out what she really did to it last.... as some of ya know, most people say "I didn't do anything" which makes a hoopla of no sense because you were using the dang thing before it was fubared so yes you did something. Likely not maliciously , but ya did something and thats what helps us narrow down the problem. Well i sat back and looked at that big metal behemoth and started to contemplate what occurred when this befuddling tragedy took place . And as I did so I had a feeling something was missing or different from most days and nights i had been there before. about 10 mins went by and she said she was coming with the pie shortly. well i just couldn't shake that feeling and thats when a light went off in my head. But apparently not on her Monitor. see people had a silly belief that they had to shut those big bulky things down when they shut off their systems. So as you realize by now the Monitor power was off. And It was something i had always told most to do and that was because of that awful lag that let key choices fly by before the screen was lit up. so you could miss something if it wasn't already powered up and ready before the tower was turned on. Needless to say she was just so happy i had made the magic happen and saved her casino nights again that i got paid my hourly wage of 20 skins for the save and half a Pie to take back through the open tundra of a wasteland of white death.lol. she never asked and i didn't tell. i figured all the non charged times and a lot was just chatting for some company to them as well made that 20 and the pie justified!. that was twenty years ago and now after all these years she is still going strong and learned enough from our visits to be a teacher somewhat to some of her friends who still think a scanner is something in Star Trek. I know . its Nerdy but its true and why i remember it so well i will never fathom.

Really guys, you all are telling stories to claim this giveaway???!!! Just give a moment of thought and ask the question, whether this is freaktab or a story writing contest conducting at school???!! To be fair to every member, freaktab should have chosen "gleam.io" or something like that instead of opting for such story writing means!! How do you know its fair and square???!!

Otherwise instead of giving a story writing contest, they better give the giveaway to one deserving member of this forum by appreciating his active participation. That way they could have given something back to the active members (I am not)!! Thanks!!
