A few years ago I used to work for a company whose laptops had a video driver which allowed the screen to be turned 90 degrees pressing a couple of keys. We did it to a bunch of colleagues just for fun and we had all kind of responses: from those who knew how to fix it (the least) to those who turned the monitor or had to find a new way to keep them attached to the desk. We did the same with a driver mirroring the screen and had a guy with a tight deadline writing his code using his girlfriend's pocket mirror! Funny days. Thank you for the rest of the stories!

Well how fancy it is, people were rushing last days to update their comps on Win10, so now i am in full of busines because they are non stop calling me that this is not working, cant start comp, smart cards not workin . . . But it is nice if you can help somebody, but sometimes i just freak out when you speak to somebody who is total numb, and bought computer thinking that it will do all by itself. CIAO

Years ago I made a PC on new year's eve, at the office I used to work. Everybody have left and the freak thing would not boot!... The boss came at 22:00 cause he forgot something and saw me struggling. He proposed to let it boot with nothing on it and boot by boot to add components. That did the job, and I finally went home just in time to change the year... The PC is still running...

My first android mini TV was a Mk808... (very poor wifi signal and not good software optimization), was supposed to be the perfect option to transform my old LCD TV in a Smart TV ... worked like a charm untill I tryed the first custom ROM, and then the second custom ROM , and so on..... until it became a paper weight !!! hahaha
Now I need a new one.

My first computer was a ZX81. I ordered it as a kit. After months of impatience I received it and I had to weld all the components.
Then, with a friend we spent hours typing strange hex codes coming from mags and, sometimes at the end, we had the surprise to discover a small game running.
To save the new game we had to use an audio cassette tape, but unfortunately the process almost always failed and we had to retype all the code to play the precious game !
One day, I've read an article describing an electronic hack for the transfert cable to the tape. I built this hack and the miracle took place : 2/3 of the programs could be correctly saved and loaded.
That's the beginning of a long story...

about 20 some years ago, i learnt two msdos commands, on the first first day of computer class from a friend...6 kids would share one computer.
the teacher had not taught us anything at that point, just little theory.
and when he was not looking, i would type "dir" and then quickly "cls"
i felt so cool showing off my computer skills to my friends.

Several years ago, friend brought dead laptop to me and asked me if I could fix it. I tried everything but it wont work. In the end I decided to try then popular "diy oven reflow" method. So I put mainboard into kitchen oven, turned it on and waited. Mainboard wasnt fixed after all, but oven and kitchen was filled with really bad fumes. Lesson learned

I too have many stories that I can tell. I've been around for a while now. I learned to program in basic on my commodore Vic-20. (Yeah I'm older than most of you here)
I'll share a more recent case of PICNIC / PEBKAC Error. A neighbor of mine had an older computer that died, so he bought a new laptop. He said he's been backing up regularly to his external USB drive, but when he plugged it in to his new laptop, none of his pictures are there. He brought the USB drive to me and I scanned it for deleted partitions, deleted files, but found nothing. It looked like a virgin drive that was never written to. He clearly lost faith in my abilities. I asked him to bring me his old PC so that maybe we can still recover his stuff from the hard drive in it. I put the drive in an enclosure and there it was. Two partitions, system and backup. Yes, he was backing up regularly. Everything was clearly dated and organized. He's just lucky that it wasn't the hard drive that died when the pc did. All his data was saved to a brand new drive (not the old virgin) and uploaded to the cloud. His faith in me was restored and we had a good laugh over a few drinks.
What's the worst thing about fixing computers for family and friends? Learning what kind of twisted porn they're in to. You can't unlearn it and you can't look at them the same again.
Oh, and if you don't know picnic or pebkac, you're a poser.
