HDMI 5.1 passthrough issues - has this been resolved ?

So I really like these cheap-o boxes but there is a fundamental problem with the 5.1 passthrough audio. Every so often in Kodi, you'll hear the audio go quiet and by the time your reflexes react and you reach for your remote, it comes back to normal levels. It starts to get pretty annoying after a while.

Does anyone use one of these boxes with 5.1 passthrough and NOT have this problem ? I have tried tons of ROMS to remedy this but they all seem to have the same issue.

I also have a minix neo U1 (same SOC) and I don't think it has the issue.

Any help, tips, or workarounds are welcome.
