hi, any idea what version of xbmc works on this box. giving one a try instead of mx and really struggling.

any help would be appreciated as can not get external player to work.

This box does not have bluetooth right? Should be similar or the same as K-R42 then. If it has bluetooth then it's similar or equal to the T-R42. I have the latter one, and am running Wasser's firmware 1.2.1. Comes with a version of XBMC pre-installed that works great. Stable. Hardware accelerated, plays 1080p perfectly. Important to get the right firmware however. Installing the K-R42 firmware on a T-R42, or vice versa, will lead to reboot loops or Wifi and Bluetooth not working.
