this is the same problem I have, I've been trying to figure it out, but to no dice I think the libpng is different on v8 than on v7. I will keep you posted if I find a solution.

You have done exactly what I'm looking for but... It doesn't work for me with LibreELEC 8.0 from kszaq on S905X.

I enable the addons (32 libs, RetroArch and EmulationStation) but when I launch ES it reboots to kodi.

Do you know if it's working with LE 8?

EDIT: I tried with 7.0.3.012 on same device and it works. Both of my tests were conducted on fresh installs.
Thanks for doing that. I have only tested it on 7.0.3.012.

If you don't mind could you test this on LibreELEC 8.0 and tell me what it says:

    Code:
    cd /storage/.emulationstation/
    ./emulationsatation

I can surely try, is ePSXe working on Raspberry Pi ? or other ARM devices?

edit: it seems it will not work "it is designed for Windows and Linux 86x architecture"

That is the main reason why I didn't get one, in the end it was too expensive for what I wanted it for plus I had my S905 which cost me about $29 US on sale and it included, a case, a power supply and a remote and now I can use it as a "RetroPie"

Own a couple of RaspberryPi's. Got them before getting the S905X device. Pi's are not great. I got the S905X device because the Pi can't do HEVC and you need to pay to unlock MPEG-2 HW decoding. People forget that Pi's are not that cheap. Once you get an SD card, power supply and case, you are look at around £50 and that is without a remote (not and issue for me as I use CEC). My NEXBOX with twice the memory and 5ghz Wi-Fi cost me £34.99.

I agree on picodrive, also Genesis_plus_gx sometimes freezes

I will do the zip thing, seems like a good idea!

Couple of things I noticed. es_input.cfg isn't blank. So doesn't ask to configure a joypad at startup.

es_systems.cfg is using genesis_plus_gx for the Sega Genesis. I would use picodrive instead. Works a lot better.

Also for fba I would remove .ZIP and just keep .zip in the es_systems.cfg file. I say this because you need to drop some bios files into the fba folder to get some games working. The issue is the bios's show up in Emulationstation. To get around this you change the .zip to .ZIP for the bios's to stop them showing up.

if i go in to add-ons and select retroarch, i'm given a list of folders so i go to the 'menu' folder which then runs retroarch. i added mario kart to the n64 folder and that does seem to work nicely. if i scroll along in retro arch it's there, but also if i go into the n64 folder it's there as well and i can select it with the remote and it runs - i currently don't have a proper joypad to test it properly though, but it does appear to be running fairly flawlessly.

i tried adding a mame rom to that folder (kung fu master) but that didn't do anything apparently

also, the "back" button on my remote reboots the box every single time if i try to go backwards in retroarch.

but i need to dash, but i'll be back later (if any of the above made any sense!)
What version of LibreELEC are you running? For EmulationStation to keep booting back into Kodi normally means it is missing libs. It should run fine on 7.0.3.012i without any issues.

Later on when you get back home SSH into the box and run:
    Code:
    cd /storage/.emulationstation/
    ./emulationsatation
and let me know if it spits out an error looking like this:
    Code:
    error while loading shared libraries:
