    Newb Questions

I purchased the Poloroid 7" Internet Tablet (PMID701c) just recently. I have a bit of experience with rooting/installing custom roms on android phones. My first question is, is the PMID701c the same, or use the same software as the P700 talked about in this forum? If so, for some reason, I can't get the rockusb drivers installed - for some reason windows is forcing it to be a portable device in device manager, shown there only as "F:/" but the driver name shows "WPD FileSystem Volume Driver" and will not allow me to switch drivers... sorry if this is noobery but I am stumped....

If the device is NOT in flash mode then Windows will only see it as a removable device. You have to put the tablet in flash mode. Then it will see it as a different device.

In my ROM kit is a readme that tells you how to put it in flash mode if you don't know already.

"Прости им, они не ведают, что творят"
"Perdona loro perché non sanno quello che fanno"
"Vergib ihnen, denn sie wissen nicht, was sie tun"
"Vergeef hen want ze weten niet wat ze doen"
"Pardonne-leur car ils ne savent pas ce qu'ils font"
"Perdónalos porque no saben que lo que hacen"
"Oprosti im, jer ne znaju što čine"
"Forgive them as they know not what they do"

Thank you for you reply. I did read over the readme file you were talking about and found this:

      1) Attach usb cable and plug in power cable.
      2) Make sure tablet is off
      4) While holding the volume down (or any physical button) plug in the usb cord OR hit the reset on the back. The unit should power up and the screen should go dark. You are now in flash mode.

this tablet has no physical volume buttons, and plugging it in while off causes the tablet to boot up and go directly to the USB toggle screen (but the device is still fully booted up during this as the home button can be hit to use it normally at this point)

You are going to need to find out how to put that unit in flash mode. If it does not have butons then I doubt the 7200 ROM will work on it.

It looks like you have the fourth and last Polaroid model showing on the southern telecom website. Another rom like the 700 might partly work but anything different would be broken (ie tv out, vol buttons). If the screen is different, it won't work at all. I would search this site on how to do a ADB rom dump and you could ask finless to work his magic and have your own rom.

To flash my Polaroid PMID700- first I have my tablet off with power cord and USB cord unplugged. Then I hold and continue to hold the menu button and plug in the USB cord. (If the android screen shows, that means you are booting up and need to start over.) I would suggest to keep holding the menu button until you notice windows trying to install the device. Windows will install it but not correctly. ( To manually change to the correct RK driver in win7 after you are in 'flash mode' - start-devices and printers-right click on your device-properties-hardware tab-properties-change settings-driver-update driver-browse-then enter the path to the drivers-64bit folder.) After that, in the devices and printers screen, scroll down to bottom. Under 'Unspecified' It shows RK29 device.

On a normal Android boot, your PC doesn't see the tablet until its almost fully booted up. Then you would see the Usb mass storage, composite and ADB driver.

            ps
In my device manager, like your screen shot, with my tablet correctly in 'flash mode', I see a 'E:\' under Portable devices but this has a Microsoft driver. Not right.
Up above that, under 'Class for rockusb devices' I see the RK29 device. If you have not installed the drivers, you would see unknown device. This is not under the portable devices. I'm not sure if your running win7 or not. But win7 has Devices and printers in the start menu and this is what I use.
