The fix involves changing the kernel sources, the details are available in this thread:
The fix has been tested by several people and should be stable and without side effects.
The above mentioned thread also contains compiled kernels for several sticks. These can be used as drop-in replacement with most existing custom firmware roms. Just start the flash tool you used to flash your custom rom, uncheck all items except the kernel, click on the white box behind the kernel and choose the fixed kernel file. I hope that our custom rom builders such as Bob and Neomode will soon be able to post complete new roms with these fixed kernels, which will be easier for most people.
Disclaimer
This fix only fixes a problem with the update rate of the display. There are of course many more possible reasons for poor video playback (slow network connection, video format, the CPU/GPU being too slow, etc, etc), those will not be solved by this fix alone.
Note to kernel/rom builders
If you decide to compile a kernel or a rom with this fix for a specific stick, then post it in the subforum for this stick, not in the above mentioned kernel thread. Please use latest kernel sources and .config from Rikomagic:
Apply the video playback fix manually by modifying the kernel sources according the the instructions in the above mentioned thread. Also make sure you enable all extra device support such as CONFIG_SND_USB_AUDIO=y
Thanks go out to
- strauzo who made the first workaround for the video problem. Alas he never released the details about his workaround, but still he showed us that it is in fact possible for a RK3188 to play video smoothly
- leolas for helping me get my initial kernel build tools setup
- rikomagic for sharing the kernel sources with us
- and everyone else on this forum of course
