    change usb storage device name

hey all .. im a bit stumped trying to figure this out.. i am trying to clone a a complete setup.. but i have 2 different usb sticks that have identicle data on them..

the setup i want to clone requires an identical usb stick.. (name) at least

so what im trying to figure out is how to change the name of the usb device so that it shows up the same as the other on the new box

ive tried to use chip genius on windows to identify what android is reading the name as.. but its not showing up in there bummer

and ive tried to just rename the folder inside of esfile explorer.. but apon system reboot or removing the chip and reinseting it.. it just renames itself back to the old one.. and i have an empty folder with the correct name right next to it lol ..

ive been pulling my hair out over this for a couple of days.. so any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!

What are the different names shown an each box?

Which box is it and what firmware are you using?

What method did you use to clone the image?

heyhey.. thanks for the reply.. right now im using a t95k pro.. and i did the clone with twrp but it does the same thing on any box.. i dont think theres anyway to solve this one .. i just have to live with the fact that android makes the storage folder name for you .. based on something in the usb sticks firmware that windows doesnt see..

so i guess my next question should be.. is it possible to creat a symbolic link in android.. (i was thinking i could create the correct folder name in the /storage folder.. and simply have that as a shortcut to the new folder.. so when the app access the folder i created it takes it to the new folder?

thanks again for you help bluesmanuk

Googling symbolic links using Android does on the surface seem to be complicated and seems only to work with EXT.

Beyond my technical capabilities I'm afraid but there are some great devs on here that may have an answer.

maybe im getting to fustrated lol .. let me try to ask the question again..

windows & android are showing two different names for a usb drive.. on windows its just G:/ lol on android its C772-926B

so i decided to used chip genius (windows) to give me all the information about that usb stick but i still could find where android is getting its names for the usb drives (same results with 3 different sticks)

so i decided to used the "usb device apk" for android still none of the information shows me where android is getting its name for the drive inside /storage/ " usb folder name"

This might not be a definitive answer as to why but I found this statement on another site when the question of the strange naming convention was bought up.

"Android 6.0 now uses the volume serial number of the formatted partition as a unique identifier to distinguish which SD card you might be using.

I guess this could be useful in case you have a device that could theoretically support multiple SD cards.
            "

I have however seen some versions/forks of Kodi that do identify SD cards/USB flash drives by a more generic name, e.g. Sandisk.
