Cheapcast app simulates Chromecast to be used on android TV sticks - anyone got it to work on the MK908?

Cheapcast is an app that emulates Chromecast so any android stick can be used to stream youtube, or any other chromecast enabled app, to your TV.

I have tried it on the MK908 and althought i can connect to my TV without problems (from a nexus 10), i cant get the videos to play. Exactly as described here

If anyone tried it, please share your experiences. It would be awesome if this would work on the MK908.

-edit: managed to stream some videos - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. Sometimes video start playing after force close of YT on the host device.

I just got my real Chromecast today.

It's like riding a tricycle after being in a jet-plane for ages. It does what it does well. Netflix and Youtube are in crystal clear HD for sure.

I was thinking of trying the Cheapcast App for grins and giggles, but why bother? If you already have an Android TV stick you wouldn't need it.

I watched a Netflix show and my wife asked me to start a show we have been watching on XBMC.... I just laughed.

I unplugged the Chromecast, which was furiously hot by the way, and plugged in my MK908.

The main reason I bought it was the price. That and the fact that I got in during the three free months of Netflix promo. So it worked out to be like $15 or so shipped.

I'm going to plug it into the little TV we have in the spare room in case I ever feel like watching Netflix with it. Unless they update it to accept more content like local media, I don't have much use for it really. When you mirror a webpage from your desktop on a PC it's almost impossible to see any text. It lags hard too mirroring a browser page. Chrome will play files like music and video, but the lag is so horrible I don't see how anyone could really use it that way.

Yeah it does seem like Youtube and music are only working. I'm sure it'll get working good enough to support chrome via PC.

when it gets released it will cost some money.

I don't get it, doesn't our stick is supposed to do that ?
I mean, either in native mode (watch youtube, netflix, video and audio) or with 3rd apps (BubbleUPnP or that kind of stuff) ?

Netflix is never 1080 on Android UNLESS you have a Nexus device on 4.3.

Netflix looks great on my Imito MX1 and Tronsamrt MK908, but it looks amazing on my Chromecast.

My digital cable looks like shite in comparison. The Chromecast is so niche it's almost pathetic.

Mine does work from the USB port on my TV and comes on with the TV power. It only does a few things though. It gets super hot and basically sends all your viewing history, private info, and personal information to Google.

If you read the terms of service, you cannot sell one if you buy it. If you give one as a gift the person has to agree to the terms and conditions AND create a Google Wallet account. It's being sold at cost to aggregate demographic information for advertising and media.

I like mine, but for a few dollars more, why bother?

Oh yeah, I got shafted on the three free months of Netflix. I was 12 minutes late after the cutoff. 12 minutes. Talk about bait and switch. It's not worth my time to fight about it, but it clearly said I was getting it when I checked out. Now all I get is canned emails from Google saying they understand my, "frustration."

It's a neat little gadget and all. The damn thing updates every other time I use it.

I have not tried cheapcast. I don't see the need for it.

I am interested in a kickstarter thing I saw last week. It was called 'plug' but now it's called "Lima."

If it works with Android I will be set. It seems pretty cool and all, but the price is too high. If someone can build one cheaper and let me plug an external hard drive into my router for streaming anywhere I'd be in hog heaven.

I cannot for the life of me get past my router to FTP share or VPN. I refuse to modify some settings to enable it. If I could access my home NAS from anywhere securely I'd be happy. This LIMA thing runs Linux and is kind of like Dropbox. The difference is there's no file size limit or cloud involved. Only your hard drive and the application.

Back to Chromecast. One thing I have noticed is that anyone on the same network can hijack the output. So if I'm watching the Walking Dead and my wife wants to watch Nip Tuck, all she has to do is press start on her tablet.

It's a little too open that way. It is pretty impressive for the output it does with such a small footprint. half a gig of RAM and barely any power. Also, it works on the 5Ghz wifi band. pretty well I'd say. They only seem to mention 2.4 on the Play Store link.

I will experiment more with the tab casting and stuff. I have tried to send local content to it through FTP, but it's above my skill level. Youtube, Netflix, Chrome browser, and Google's Movies and Music is about the extent of it right now.

Not bad for $35, but not spectacular.
