I think you will get just as much cooling effect with the 3.3 volt as the 5 volt. So, yes, use either diodes or resistors to reduce the voltage. I personally used 3 diodes in series.

5v vs 3.3v : is there a real difference for cooling ? and for noise ?
Yes, you can get the power from top or bottom side, and the fan will power off when the box is powered off.

A slower fan will definitely reduce the noise, but you will have to do some trial and error on how much you wish to slow the fan. I am using a "cheap" fan, and reduced the fan voltage by half, but I can still hear it. I have ordered a more expensive 30mm fan with ball bearings, and will be testing that, when I receive it.

You need to read this thread, there are some very good ideas, discussed here.

EDIT: P.X has a thermal switch on order, to test. It will turn the fan OFF when the temp is low, and turn ON the fan with the temp rises........ So stay tuned!!

have you a pic of the pin to connect ?
    Yes , it will.

I would like to have the better way to cool the box with less sound possible.... perhaps 3.3v or 5v is necessary i don't know...
Look at page 8, line 109, it shows you which pin to use. They are the ports for the USB ports on the top side, and when you power your box off, the fan stops.....

Yes, you need to solder it on the underside of the mobo, where usb connectors are localized.

    Hi,

Is it possible to connect a pi fan on my m8s pro L in order to have it working only when box is ON ?

Here is a thread on h96 pro plus with hw cooling mods

I opened this thread and got my h96 pro plus 65deg max with box closed and no fan!
how? I installed an Intel atom heatsink!

    check massage #50

Running my Pi Fan at 50% of 5V
Resistor the same value as the fan resistance.
Silent at about a foot or two.
Blowing into the box - down onto the SOC works best for me too.

Added 3 diodes in series, with a voltage drop across the diodes of 2.38 volts. Can't tell if the fan speed dropped or not, still hear the fan, but not as bad.

Edit: More tinkering, fan virtually silent, even with my ear to fan, can't hear it. HOWEVER, the fan is "floating" now, when I secure the fan to the box, I get noise. Also, even with that much voltage drop, the fan starts on it's own. I don't have to kick start it, like I used to have to kick start my old Harley's......

Edit 2: Temp is hovering around 60 62 C. If i turn the fan over, to blow INTO the box, then the temp will drop more. For right now, I will run it like this for a couple of days.
