Leelbox MXQ bricked, need help please

    Hello all,

A friend gave me his Leelbox MXQ to try and work on. He was trying to do something to it and ended up bricking it. I'm a little but more of a computer person than he is so he asked me to take a look at it and see if I could get it up and running again. All I know of it was that it was running Android 4.4.2 when it last worked.

I am more familiar with Fire OS, though have an Android based phone with some apps. I tried to research troubleshooting methods for this box but have come up empty. I attempted to go in to recovery by unplugging the box, pressing (and holding) the reset button with a toothpick, and plugging the box in, then removing the toothpick. It does not take me in to recovery. I also repeated these steps while keeping the toothpick pressed in but that did not work either. I can get it to go in to the TWRP recovery though using their recovery.img but don't know what to do next.

There seem to be many variations of the MXQ so I have no idea what to look for with regards to firmware, in case that is needed. Though I am open to stock firmware or even custom as long as it is stable and has full support for wifi, remote, etc.

I have read about using program on your pc and connecting the MXQ to the computer but unfortunately my male to male USB cord that I have on hand doesn't seem to work as a data line - though it does power the unit because the blue light on the box turns on when connected with my pc even though the power cord is not plugged in.

I have also seen some help posts mention a picture of the board can help possibly but I have no idea if the case can be opened up without breaking it. Here is a photo of how the box looks on top and I have to admit I have not seen many of these when searching for help:

Thank you for reading and I hope someone can lend a helping hand.

if your male to male usb cable is not working use an otg to usb, common with most phones....and use the usb burning tool, with an image for the mxq...its an older box, i would not try to got to a higher firmware then the 4.4.2...stick with mxq firmware...i have fixed about 10 of these boxes, and use one, only for testing images...so far i have about 10 diffirent images, that were not suppose to work, and they do.but none over 4.42, none will take 5.0 are higher android.

Hi karnavor, thank you for your reply. As I did not have an OTG to USB cable, I spent the morning looking for one at different stores until I finally came across one.

How do I go about using the OTG to USB cable to install new firmware, is this something that I am going to do from my phone to the MXQ? And how do I know which firmware to use? For example, on this page there are a few different choices:

MXQ M12 TV Box Android KitKat 4.4.2 custom firmware
MXQ Pro TV Box Android Kitkat 4.4.2 Custom firmware
MXQ TV Box Android KitKat 4.4.2 Custom Firmware

I would assume this MXQ box I have right now is not pro, and I don't believe M12, so would it be the bottom option? Sorry for the questions, I am trying to learn.

I should mention that I thought the OTG cable would be to work it from my Android phone to the MXQ. The MXQ that I am working on does not have an OTG port, nor does my computer. I don't know how this will affect things.

I am running Windows 7. I have tried connecting directly to it through all USB ports on both machines with no luck of a recognized connection in Windows. I have a netbook that I tried earlier too without any luck.

              Hi ,

first open up is really simple , most 4 screws under the bottom site ,

second , if the Burningtool is not installed on PC , no Drivers installed ,

so Box could not be recognised .

If it is bricked you maybe have to "shortPins" on Nand to get it back to

Life , so it must be open .

There are so many Version of this Box , without Specs nobody can help

              you , what Wifichip is used , Ethernetchip , RAM , ROM ..... ???

I am no AML Pro , but without that the knowing Users can not help .

Maybe a new cheap Box , with newer Specs will be better ???

hope it helps / greetings / gefattern

reboot windows 7, and hold down the f8 key, when screen comes up, go to bottom and click driver signing...try to find the usb burning tool, thats a folder, not an executable file....open folder and if your license file is zipped up zip it...with power on box on, go to world cup device and install driver, after that click on dpinsta64 and install..start your usb burning tool, and check your image...top left, import image, if you get a parsing error, image is not complete, once you get a good image, then, start your box in recovery mode...if it stops at 2 percent image is not for your box...get another...when you have the right image, it will flash the new image.....parsing image is an incomplete image, 2 percent is image is corrupt, bogus, not for your box...........windows is not friendly with media boxes....it may take a few times, but it will and does work, takes about 3 minutes to write the image to the box....

your box has the amlogic s805 chipset, https://leelbox-tech.com/web/firmware by the way if it stops at 2 percent, your box is still good...you just have wrong image..its a safety factor.

Thank you gefattern and karnavor for your follow ups, I really do appreciate you both taking the time to reply. I have to say I am leaning towards recommending getting a cheap new box to my friend. I tried everything you said karnavor and had no luck.

Even came across this thread with a similar box, though it now appears the one I am working on is a earlier version:

Tried shorting the pins on Nand with it connected to PC and it just does not want to connect (no ding upon connect or shorting as done in post linked above). Here is a pic of the board if that helps any:

I don't know why my computer won't connect (with the ding sound) to it and have not had any luck flashing firmware on an SDcard with TWRP. I am almost at my wits end and have the white towel in my hand unless there is anything else left to try?
