Is an H96 Pro TV dongle the same as an H96 Pro TV box? If so, then you probably can try CoreELEC. The Which DTB do I use? list has some entries of an H96 Pro support.

best Way , always backup before start , small Info even CustomRoms exist , made by Superceleron ,

Yes, 3 custom ROMs are available so far:
1. Superceleron's "normal" Rom
2. Superceleron's "android TV" Rom
3. Ricky Divjakovski's "Poison" Rom

All are great, and all are available here at freaktab too just search for them.
Superceleron's builds are a little more stable, Ricky's more custom, Ricky's are flashable via recovery. I like them all.
if you are using a simple remote then the "android TV" build will help you navigate,
if you have a cursor/touchpad/mouse then then "Normal" version will do just fine and more customisable.
I prefer superceleron's overall, but if you have no PC or having problems with amlogics USB tool them Ricky's build via TWRP is easy as it gets (also no need to wipe anything either, just flash over your current build!)
