Depends on your box, as some boxes have been released in multiple versions, and manufacturers. Usually each custom firmware is based on the latest stock version at the time of its release. Problem is not many custom roms have ongoing updates, so most likely you can find a newer stock release that is better than the last best custom revision.
example, M8S pro-pro-c mini has a slightly modded stock by a Russian developer made long after the a final best firmware known cross compatible for other boxes, which no custom firmware was being made for that box.
as of recent my H96 PRO PLUS V6 has a late 2018 stock firmware that is better than SCV4a and SCV7a firmwares, which many believe is the best. Mostly because of some mods to make a user experience more than 100% compatability on apps.
so, mostly peeps want gizmos more than cross compatibly with various apps, and will make the best rom skewed between one groups needs and the other.
