Just a follow up for any who have interest.
After I was able to re-flash the rom, everything fell into place. Battery life is now good, no abnormal drain.
The S1 is quick with good wi-fi and screen response. It is stable with the new ROM.
The screen, being lower res ...is the only real negative, but it is still plenty adequate.
