As stated by wololo

The current xbmc HEAD broke support for external players on android several months ago.
I have a patch to fix this, and am hoping to get it submitted:http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=175341

Just giving a heads-up.. on this fine release..
--now i can choose.. open with with : internal or external videoplayer

you still need the 'player' xml file

Hi, I would like to try this out but what do you mean by "you still need the 'player' xml file'? do you mind to share the details?

Update: tried to install the apk, but it said:
"App not installed - An existing package by the same name with a conflicting signature is already installed"

EDIT: I figured out and it's working great with external player. Thanks for the post.
EDIT1: Using external MX or BSplayer or MOBOplayer actuall break a few (or maybe more) like Hulu...

Sorry.. i should have given more info

note :
to display "play using" click scroll button ( only works on 'file links' ) this shows your videoplayer options
-dvdplayer = xbmc's internal player
-mx-player = has no external subtitle support and is not good with flash contents ( disable repeat video, when done, under settings mx)
-4k player = works best on local content (allwinner based units) online streams give to much buffer nags
-ctv player = great player for amlogic devices
#make sure android/settings/developer option : "don't keep activaties" is disabled ( or else xbmc is not there after external player is done playing )
