    Issues on Issues :(

I have a genuine MK808B that I have tried multiple ROMs with. None ever seem to be stable, video is always choppy(and I'm playing it from a TF card not streaming), and it just constantly glitches. Like clicking on ES File Explorer gives me an error about not being able to play ______ video, or Play Store telling me their is no WiFi while still being connected and working as verified by opening a browser and going to a website. Really weird random stuff like that. It even once pretended to reboot itself, as far as I could tell. It just went blank screen, and then a half width finless boot screen image, and then back to the home screen.

The thing also refuses to use an external 2.5" HDD through USB. Like it can't give it enough power to keep it spinning but can get it going and see what's on it, then drops and remounts repeatedly. I've verified there is no power problem by hooking up a 2000mA wall charger to the power in USB port AND another 500mA wall charger to the OTG port.

I've tried 4 different ROMs now, and now I'm going to reDL them all one by one to make sure I didn't get a corrupted file. Oh, and the neither flash tool reports any errors after flashing.
I'm ready to get a really big hammer, and fix it for good.

    Any tips?

Highly recommend Digitop's September rom (there has been some saying digitop's Walkman rom is better for certain apps situations, though). You need to make sure you get MX Player, along with the ARM Neon codec. There are a few other helpful optimization settings for MX Player which I'll search for later today and get back to you.

Random reboot can be caused by overloading the device with tasks, I believe --- or possibly just a bug in whichever ROM you had flashed.

Digitops roms are a •bit• trickier to install since you need CWM installed, but mo123's thread has install instructions which should explain everything. If not, there is a CWM FAQ here which helped me a ton.

Once I got digitiops rom along with properly configured MX player w/ neon codec set up, the MK808B really started working like I wanted it to.

Here is a post where I explain my experience with installing CWM -- I also linked to the CWM FAQ in my post: http://www.freaktab.com/showthread.p...ll=1#post96944

Hmm, well I went into the Dev options and set the background processes to 0 allowed. I closed everything and started MX player from an icon on the home screen with the Neon codec installed as it asked me to do.

I've also tried a version of VLC, 3 versions of XBMC, and even the default Youtube app from the Play Store won't work on this thing. It crashes on startup.

The best ROM so far is Lewy's latest, but it has issues too. It will randomly popup a message that says "Android has stopped working." I just close it out and continue as before. I've also tried Picuntu, and it won't work either. Boots to a command prompt and that's all it gives me.

I'll try the Digitop rom and see what happens. Since I posted this I also DLed the latest Finless rom and still no good. I appreciate the help.

Aside from setting up the codec, you need to change a few settings as well. It was explained somewhere here on the forum, and I tried searching, but I am having a bit of trouble finding it. I'll definitely find it and get back to you unless someone else knows and posts it.

I used to use Lewy's hybrid firmware as well, but it has known issues with WiFi -- after a certain amount of time, WiFi cuts to a fraction of the normal speed.

That's strange because Lewy's had the more stable wifi connection of the 2 that detected it at all.

          Downloading the digitop ROM now.

            Hey brother,

I found the post I was referring to; http://www.freaktab.com/showthread.p...ll=1#post97527

Follow it •exactly• and you'll be set. The only sad thing is that not all apps allow you to use an external video player :-(

            Good luck.

Edit: also, the post tells you to click HW each time you play a video, but I noticed there is an option in mxplayer settings to force it enabled. Not positive though, this might be a setting only available in MX player pro.

Coolness. I had poked around in the MX settings, and I know I ticked something to do with H/W video decoding, but I never messed with audio decoding.

I'll see what's what in a minute. My internet is SLOW.

Got digitop up and running. The recovery method is kinda weird/slow. Not sure why they went with that over the flash tool through USB, but it worked fine.

Seems stable so far. Gave me an error about an unusable SD card on first boot, but a format of the internal seems to have fixed it. Updated a couple things through Play Store, and it still seems stable. WiFi is good, and it seems very snappy.

I set up MX as instructed, and I'll get back as soon as I test a video file. So far so good.

EDIT: Seems to work OK. I've a feeling the TF card is holding it back from playing perfectly smoothly. It's a no name **** piece. It still won't keep the HDD spinning either. Drops out and remounts just browsing files on the drive. A powered USB hub "might" fix that. Think I can just hook a double male USB cable up to one port of the unpowered hub I'm using now and use the spare 500mA wall charger to feed it that way.

Most people have to format internal storage first time to get the SD Card corrupted error away with CWM roms.
CWM roms are actually preferred by most since you can just copy the rom onto a SD Card and flash it from the device, no PC required, no cables, no drivers, no flash problems.

Archos Video Player is also very good, maybe better than MXPlayer, since it can play network shares immediately(no need to use ES File Manager to browse network and open with MXPlayer).
It has Poster Art for all your movies, TV Shows and works with Mediacodec(newer) instead of Libstagefright(older).

Thanks for the headsup about Archos. I had just gotten it a few minutes ago. It does seem much better in fact.

Also I just hacked together a double ended male usb cable from scraps to test my theory. I was right. The mk can't/won't/whatever provide enough juice for the HDD. Feeding the hub from the 500mA charger while using the 2000mA one for the mk works nicely. So a cheapo travel hub and a $1.50 double ended usb from **** solves the issue so far.

I can see the CWM thing. I guess I just like hands on.

Gonna play a 720p file from the HDD to see if this is all cleared up. Only test file so far was a DVD rip, so....

Oh, and glad the corrupted thing was normal.

EDIT: Seems it's fine now. I guess the TF card just couldn't keep up with the bitrate. I can now play a 720p 5.6GB file just fine. I still notice some VERY minor hickups in MX, but in Archos no such issue. It's as perfect as it's going to get, I think. HDD is holding strong.

I'm glad I posted this. Never would have tried the suggested ROM. Thanks guys.

Issues again. Still using the same rom, but I'm getting stuttering in video and audio every now and then.

I've tried setting the background processes to 1 at most, and it's running at 720p instead of 1080. I think I'm ready to just go to one of the new RK quad cores. This thing has been nothing but buggy since I've had it.

I appreciate everyone's input, but I think I'm done with it.

Oh wow. Another one. Props to you. I'll give it a go. Thanks.

I already had ordered an MK809, so I'll get to see how the 2 compare now.

Yep. Brand new PS adapter. Look up a few posts in this thread, and it explains all I've done to fix this thing.

I either have a buggy unit, or it just can't handle what I'm trying to do with it. I'm guessing the former.
