Help me find the ever-elusive Flash Mode

    Please help!

I'm flashing my 2nd X7, following the simple instructions in Finless' ROM package. Went just fine the first time a few months ago.

Got my new X7, today. Using the same instructions, no matter what I do, all I get is the Android Recovery menu. Windows never sees it, of course. I've tried every variation I can think of in terms of how long to hold in the buttons, and all I get is recovery.

Hopefully, this happened to one of you and you found a fix. Please tell me! Any helpwould be appreciated. While I'mnot an Android n00b, I surely don't know it as well as I do my 25 years of Wintel experience. No matter how obvious your advice might seem, don't assume I know it!

    Again: Please help!

    Thanks in advance

Well.. there is that 'YouTube' vid that lewy posted
There is also a 'reboot' app (needs root) see tech room section
There a app called 'android terminal' with a few commands.. Google 'reboot bootloader'
There is also a 'howto' posted at 'blog.geekbuying.com'

Did you enable 'usb debugging' and 'USB masstorage device'
Try a differend usb cable? Or Usb port?
    What flashtool are you using?
Whats 'device manager' reporting? What windowz version are you using?

    Cheers..

      Well...I feel like an ass!

No seriously, thanks. some of that info I didn't know existed. As I (wrongly?) understand it, some of that doesn't apply, as tne instructions I used, from Finless' ROM packages, don't require the Debug or Storage settings; I have power off, and boot by holding in the reset and pressing power for 2 secs. I know that wiorked on my first X7, anyway..

Regardless, thanks again. Perhaps some of your suggestions will help figure out where I went worng. And, yes, I did swap cables, ports, etc.

      Back to work.

FYI there is an ODD issue with the X7. Once you put it in flash mode if you wait too long to flash a ROM it will just shut off! SO make sure you have the flash program open and then put it in flash mode manually. Watch at the bottom of the tool to see if it changes to found Rock Loader USB.

Also when doing it manually hold the reset button and press the power button for about 2 seconds and release the power button then keep holding the reset button until windows bongs. If it doesn't do it, try again holding power a little bit longer.

No need to throw me $$$ but did you get into flash mode?

Well, I was already planning on another donation, anyway. Thbis was just the impetus to do it..

No, sadly "real life" has, once again, intruded on the importtant stuff. I plan on trying again this weekend after the family crap is done.

              Thanks again, tho.

Yup. got drivers installed, have Kernel and Boot imgs selected, all looks good......and then when I try to flash, I get an error "MSC device canot do upgrade"

                Huh?

Makes an Olde Farte like me feel st00pid. Now what, may I ask?

You need to go into setting>storage and change the device to Mass Storage not MTP.

I didn't want to start another thread, but I seem to have the same problem as OP. I've followed the protocol for getting into flash mode and installing drivers, but everytime I open the update tool, the device isn't found. I've held the recover and power button until it dings and then update the drivers that way. Unfortunately, when the drivers finish installing, there is a question mark next to the Rock Usb device in Device Manager (I'm Win7 64bit mind you). I've installed all the drivers for the device using Moborobo no problem.

The funny thing is I was able to root the device (using http://minixforums.com/threads/noobs...ry-on-it.2382/) and I am able to run the terminal, but if I want to boot into the bootloader, it gives me an operation denied error. It allows me to boot into CWM recovery. Does that mean my device is locked? I've searched for that, but everyone says that their device is unlocked from the start.

Also, does the minix give a special screen when it's in flash mode? Mine is just blank when I press the recover+power button! Any help on this will be much appreciated as I have no way to update my firmware nor install any custom ROMs!

I already HAD it set up as mass storage. I knew to do that from having flashed your ROMs on other devices, including my other X7. Of course, as I suspected from the beginning the problem was human error! Let me explain.

The device I was using an Asus VivoSmart tablet, running full Win 8, not RT. I had successfully flashed several devices with it, and the form factor made it very convenient to use. I already had the drivers installed from the drivers installed from my last flashing, which was your 1.6 on my other X7. this is why i was so confused as to why it didn't work.

Anyway, I set it aside for a couple of days, and just let it percolate in the back of my mind. When I woke up today, I thought I knew what was wrong: since that last flashing, my tablet has been upgraded to Windows 8.1! I didn't think that would make a difference, but no matter what I did, I couldn't make it work.

I grabbed my girlfriend's Gateway laptop, and BINGO! 10 minutes later 1.6 is on m X7 and looking good!

MY guess is there is some sort of incompatibility with Win 8.1, but that is WAY above my paygrade! I lever that to the UberGeek-Godz like you to figure out, but you may want to let others know it might be an issue.

Anay, thanks again for a great ROM and great help. I wish I could donate more than I have, Bob, you deserve it for all you do, but the Social Security only goes so far!
