    Kodi 19 Matrix

Available for download the first Alpha version of Kodi 19 “Matrix”, a version change that imposes important new features on a technical level. The most profound change in the addon scope where it jumps to Phyton 3 and this will block all add-ons that are not updated, something that will certainly generate several problems. On the other hand there is more control over addons that will block the ability to overwrite official repositories.

In addition to this internal change KODI 19 Matrix receives improvements to play content based on the AV1 codec, it is now possible to decode this format by software. You have in this article the complete list of changes of this new version that represents the future of KODI for the next years.

I've played with Matrix dev builds on x86 for a while now.

The number of addons that are still incompatible due to the python update is still quite large as Matrix official looks like it is almost imminent.

It is going to be interesting too see what will happen with AMLogic boxes now that all dedicated AML code is being removed as it could potentially have an impact on sales if there is no back porting.

As far as AV1 is concerned, it plays reasonably well up to 1080p on x86 in software but 4K does understandably struggle on Intel GPU.

I expect that there will be a flood of new SOC's supporting AV1in hardware, one of the first supposedly being the AML S905X4, although there has not been any news on the next line of SOC's for a while now, so no real idea of when they will actuality arrive.

How long it will take for AV1 to take off is anybodies guess.

It is supposed to be open source but there may well be some civil suits from patent trolls that could delay it.

Anybody that has tried to encode to AV1 has had quite the shock too because if you thought that H265 encoding was slow, just wait until you see the pedestrian pace of AV1.
