Here is the response that I received from Southern Telecom after sending them two e-mails regarding the firmware and a "locked tablet" issue.
We are working on making the firmware available for this unit. I am sorry for the delay, but the firmware and upgrade guide will not be available until next week. Please be patient and look for the upgrade guide and software to be available by Wednesday.
Thank you for your patience,

I received a response back from them today as well. (Same guy too!)
He confirmed that the same Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS will be available via a firmware upgrade for 701C users. Unfortunately it won't be available for at least 2 weeks.
here is what i got A firmware update for your Polaroid tablet model number PMID701i is currently in development and will be available within the next two weeks for download on our support site:http://southerntelecom.com/polaroidsupport/ As you are a valued customer and Polaroid Tablet owner, it is our mission to provide the best support possible for this product. Before applying a software upgrade, especially in the case of firmware, it is important that we receive the most current software from our Tablet technicians. To protect the warranty on your device, we strongly suggest that you refrain from using third party upgrades that are intended for a similar-but-different model. This could render the device inoperable and void your warranty. Please be patient and do not feel the need to return your tablet to the retailer as this firmware; with instructions, will be available by April 20, 2012. Thank you for your patience,
Well one thing... When they do release it, you guys will now have a factory ROM to mod

"Pzebacz im, bo nie wiedzą, co czynią"
"Прости им, они не ведают, что творят"
"Perdona loro perché non sanno quello che fanno"
"Vergib ihnen, denn sie wissen nicht, was sie tun"
"Vergeef hen want ze weten niet wat ze doen"
"Pardonne-leur car ils ne savent pas ce qu'ils font"
"Perdónalos porque no saben que lo que hacen"
"Oprosti im, jer ne znaju što čine"
"Forgive them as they know not what they do"

It says right in the email that you better watch out for us modders. We are evil dont ya know. I mean how wrong is it of us to try to find a way to hlp people who have a locked tablet to be able to get into it so they can use it while waiting for the developers to figure out how to help them. Ironically if people didn't have a way to get it at least useable, they probably would get more returns.
On a second note, if you do start modding, it is yours. You own it, you take the chances if it does get screwed up. I don't think from what I have seen that a perma-brick is possible, though unfortunately it is the same thing that makes getting into recovery hard, but hey, where there is a will, eventually we will have a way.
Helpful hint for before they release the 701c ics rom, install kk rom kit and use cwm to backup your data. Hopefully the rom will be perfect and fast but just in case you will want something to fall back to. Also move a copy of the clockwork file to your PC.

Glad I didn't hold my breath. 8o)
Exactly what I was thinking.
Hello!
Meanwhile, I'll play with the 701i I bought yesterday. THIS battery has over 6 hours on it from full charge so far. That's twice what I get out of the other tablet.
I will look for another browser, too. Sometimes, it takes about 3 refreshes for some pages to load.

Very interested to see what you can get out of the 701i unit! It's been lonely swimming in the 701i pond alone these past few weeks. Good luck!
